When I carry large amounts of cash and/or metals, I request a private screening.

This. I always ask for a private screening. I have always (knock on wood) had a fairly pleasant experience this way. I also explain to the agents that I will be recording the entire process with my phone for my protection. I have only had one person get pissy about that, and I simply asked her to leave the room if she wasn't comfortable with it.
