Arlington assistant police chief arrested on family violence charge
ARLINGTON — An assistant police chief, who just hours before had joined other police officials and officers in an event to end domestic violence, was arrested early Sunday at his home on a family violence charge, police said.
Assistant Police Chief James Hawthorne was arrested at his home on a charge of assault with bodily injury-family member, according to Arlington jail records.
He was booked into jail at 3:45 a.m. Sunday with bail set at $1,500 on the assault charge and then released.
Hawthorne also was being held on an emergency protective order which a victim had filed, Arlington Lt. Christoper Cook said Sunday in a telephone interview.
Cook declined to comment further.
“There is now a criminal and administrative investigation,” Cook said.
Police declined to comment on who the victim was or the circumstances that led to a police call to Hawthorne’s home in south Arlington.
Hawthorne, a member of the department for 28 years, has been placed on administrative leave.
“I am deeply disappointed that an Arlington assistant police chief was involved in an incident of domestic violence,” Arlington Police Chief Will Johnson said in a statement. “Regardless of who you are or where you work, domestic violence will not be tolerated or ignored in our community.”
Officers were sent to Hawthorne’s home about 1 a.m. Sunday. Hawthorne was off duty.
Hawthorne serves in the Community Support Bureau. He was among the applicants for the chief’s job after Chief Theron Bowman left for a deputy city manager position.
He is one of three assistant police chiefs in the department, according to the department’s website.
On Saturday morning, Hawthorne, along with Johnson and other Arlington police officials, participated in the Take a STAND Break the Silence 10K/5K/Walk at River Legacy Parks, according to the Arlington Police Department’s Twitter feed.
The event was to raise awareness, provide support and remember those affected by domestic violence. It was designed to raise funds for organizations to financially support individuals in transition from violent situations and to raise funds to build a safe facility, according to the event website.
Hawthorne is married with an adult son and daughter, according to a 2003 University of Texas at Arlington magazine article. He graduated from O.D. Wyatt High School in Fort Worth where he was named a distinguished alumnus.
The 2003 article noted that Hawthorne, a 1983 UTA graduate, was the recipient of the 2003 Outstanding African American Alumnus award from the university, and he had received the NAACP’s Thurgood Marshal Award for Law Enforcement.
Throughout his career, Hawthorne had taught law enforcement management and administration at UTA and he also instructed classes on crisis negotiations and problem-solving at the Arlington Police Department and the North Central Texas Regional Police Academy, according to the article.
