Quick lesson learned... Older friend of mine hired a local farm hand (read un-documented worker) to trim some trees at his house. This farm hand has been around for 20 years. A lot of us in this area hire him for labor when needed. Well, he fell of the ladder and broke his wrist while trimming my friends trees. My friend told him, just give me the medical bills and I will handle it. He's not "out of work" as he can still work with his hand in a cast.. Well, I guess some of his friends suggested he get an attorney and sue...Great. Now my buddy is getting sued by some illegal alien for falling off a ladder. My buddy wasn't there when he fell and always tells him not to climb a ladder without someone holding it.
This is so wrong. My buddy and a lot of us have done a lot for this guy. We've taken Christmas presents for his kids over the years and he's learned a lot of trades from the local ranchers....
So lesson learned, the hand that feeds will get bit.

Hence why you hire a business who carries insurance to handle that work. Just not worth the risk on so many different levels. I just forked out $700 for a shattered window on a commercial job.

Had a couple guys I have picked up from Day labor & caught assault charges cause one got pissed that I didn't pay him enough at the end of the day. Needless to say Day Labor guys come with strings attached.

If you're going to hire anyone to work on your place doing anything remotely dangerous, you should have a property and casualty insurance policy. Everyone gets sued.

He's got insurance. It's just crap this guy is suing. My buddy was taking care of the bills and would have thrown some cash to help the missed work days.
He got some ambulance chaser that's seeing dollar signs. My buddy has choo choo money, but he's just a good guy...

As I understand it, most contractors have the subcontractors sign a waiver that they are not responsible for accidents. It must work as I doubt most of these subs are insured.

Any decent lawyer would argue that nothing that your friend did caused the injury, and a sensible judge will acknowledge that. It could be a PITA but then he counter sues to take care of his legal expenses.
