  • TxDMV launching new paperless titles.

I am NOT a fan of this at all. Currently it's optional and only for franchised dealers, but soon it will be moved to used car dealers and to private sales. The complete press release is in PDF format, so I can't quote it here.

AUSTIN – Texas Department of Motor Vehicles officials today announced that Texas is the first state in the country to begin a paperless vehicle title system.

The system – called webDEALER – creates electronic vehicle titles, or eTitles, for Texans and turns stacks of paper into a simple Internet-based process for dealers.

“The TxDMV is protecting Texans and streamlining the business process for dealers and county tax offices statewide,” said TxDMV Executive Director Whitney Brewster.

Travis County and Leif Johnson Ford are the first to try webDEALER, which electronically transfers the buyer’s information and fees from the dealer to the county tax office.

“I think Texans will be pleased to learn that with webDEALER they will no longer have to fill out all those paper government forms,” said Luanne Caraway, a TxDMV board member and the Hays County tax assessor-collector.

Currently, there are more than 25 million titles in the state’s motor vehicle database. These represent existing paper titles.

“Not everyone in Texas is going to receive an eTitle overnight,” Brewster said. Texans with existing titles keep their paper ones.

The webDEALER system is voluntary and expected to be available to all new car dealers in the summer of 2014. Bill Wolters, president of the Texas Automobile Dealers Association, predicted new car and truck dealers in the association are ready to embrace the system. “It’s going to save time and money,” he added.

The TxDMV licenses more than 2,600 franchised dealers in Texas. These dealers process the title work on their vehicle sales through the state’s 254 county tax offices.

They say that it increases security, they say it stops people from stealing your titles and reassigning them. To me, it seems like it would be far easier for someone to hack in and assign the title to themselves, rather than risk getting shot while trying to steal it out of an office.

I'm sure this has nothing to do with the fact that it completely eliminates open titles and allows them to collect all of that delicious tax revenue that they miss out on.

It's going to cut into a lot of people's fun money. It's also going to put every title runner in the state out of business. I'm actually torn since I am a used car dealer. It will save me time and depending on how they will handle private sales, it could wind up sending a lot of customers to used car dealers.

On the other hand, I hate all things electronic when it comes to business. They are calling it voluntary right now, lets hope it stays that way.

Looks like I need to find a car dealer to work out a deal with in the near future.

I think that everybody has worked somewhere that has implemented some new "green" idea that's supposed to reduce the amount of paper used but in reality hard-copies are still printed out and kept in some huge ass file room and pretty much no paper at all is saved. This idea seems to be along those lines.

                          Hi.

It could be a better way to do things, but like Obamacare, its all in the implementation and execution. We bought a program to do all this paperwork, but it still has to be printed out and walked into the tax office. If this will keep that tax office visit lower, or eliminate it, it would be good.

it surely would help with the "help me find this car/truck" threads we see every couple of months, since you might be able to log in and transfer the title at the time of sale.

IF you like your paper title, you can keep your paper title.
