Craig and I have always liked that we can have silence and it be a comfortable silence. It's never been awkward at all. With 3 kids, work, school, kid's activities/sports, there isn't a lot of quiet times around here. lolToken Split Tail

Originally posted by science shitSometimes, you need a little peace and quiet to stay sane. But it turns out too much quiet can drive you crazy- or at least make you hallucinate. That’s what scientists at Orfield Labs in Minneapolis have found by studying how subjects react in their anechoic chamber, also known as the world’s quietest room. The sound level in the room, which actually has the Guinness World Record, is -9 decibels, compared to the average “quiet” room’s 30, according to MPR News.
The key to the level of silence is the fact that the walls, floor and ceiling absorb all sound, rather than reflecting it, as most surfaces do. Thus the term anechoic: no echo. It’s so quiet, you can hear your own organs: your heart, stomach, even your ears, which make a tiny amount of noise. It turns out that it’s not an especially pleasant experience, especially in the dark. The longest anyone has ever spent alone in the chamber? Forty-five minutes.
Orfield Labs uses the anechoic chamber to test the noise levels of various products like LED lights. But watch out: it could easily become a place to drive people mad.Fuck you. We're going to Costco.

My ways of that are...
Camping and hiking...
Hunting...
Out on the lake between 2300ish and 0400 (depending when guides come for bait) is as good as the prior two. (I don't consider this camping, no campfire, no tent, etc...etc on the boat) Guess you could beach camp.
In regards to camping though....very few things beat a sub 40 degree night, with no clouds, a slight breeze a small tent and a good sleeping bag.
My kids are now at the age where I have them do all those things with me besides hunting (only 4) - so not as much quiet time. I tell ya though, when they lay down - they are OUT when doing stuff outside all day and sleep outside in the cooler weather.Originally posted by MR EDDU defend him who use's racial slurs like hes drinking water.

I like going into the back yard and laying in a lounge chair with a book and something to drink. It's not very quiet since I'm next to a freeway and the dfw airport, but it's still relaxing and just back ground noise. I enjoy watching the planes over head, some of which are flying pretty low and booking it. Miss spending a lot of time like that back there with my dog.

My true point of peace is in a boat, decent breeze, anchored down and leaned back with a cold drink. I could be water, Dr. Pepper or my prefered beer. It doesn't matter, I will feel right within a short stent of time while hearing the water move. Any other time I am just being proactive or reactive. Damnit, now I want to go to the lake and it is too cold for that shit.
Wait, wasn't there a study in a sound absorbing room that most people couldn't last over an hour? This thread just made me think of that.

A lot of people don't realize this about LA but there are literally thousands of hiking trails here, and most of them are generally within an hour (or less) drive from wherever you happen to live.
One of my favorite things to do to relax is to go hiking up in the San Gabriel mountains east of LA at 7,000 feet and just enjoy the solitude and the silence, and listen to the wind blowing thru the trees. When you are up there it's hard to remember that you are right outside LA.
