Craig and I have always liked that we can have silence and it be a comfortable silence. It's never been awkward at all. With 3 kids, work, school, kid's activities/sports, there isn't a lot of quiet times around here. lol

That’s what scientists at Orfield Labs in Minneapolis have found by studying how subjects react in their anechoic chamber, also known as the world’s quietest room. The sound level in the room, which actually has the Guinness World Record, is -9 decibels, compared to the average “quiet” room’s 30, according to MPR News.

The key to the level of silence is the fact that the walls, floor and ceiling absorb all sound, rather than reflecting it, as most surfaces do. Thus the term anechoic: no echo. It’s so quiet, you can hear your own organs: your heart, stomach, even your ears, which make a tiny amount of noise. It turns out that it’s not an especially pleasant experience, especially in the dark. The longest anyone has ever spent alone in the chamber? Forty-five minutes.

Orfield Labs uses the anechoic chamber to test the noise levels of various products like LED lights. But watch out: it could easily become a place to drive people mad.

          My ways of that are...

          Camping and hiking...
          Hunting...
Out on the lake between 2300ish and 0400 (depending when guides come for bait) is as good as the prior two. (I don't consider this camping, no campfire, no tent, etc...etc on the boat) Guess you could beach camp.

In regards to camping though....very few things beat a sub 40 degree night, with no clouds, a slight breeze a small tent and a good sleeping bag.

My kids are now at the age where I have them do all those things with me besides hunting (only 4) - so not as much quiet time. I tell ya though, when they lay down - they are OUT when doing stuff outside all day and sleep outside in the cooler weather.

We do the camping thing, too (obviously), but we haven't done much camping since Aly was diagnosed. The cold nights really hit her hard and causes her to be in a lot of pain so we don't really get out as much as we'd like. In fact, last time we camped with the kids was before she was diagnosed and we couldn't figure out why she was crying and throwing a fit. I had to end up driving home Fri/Sat night so Aly could get warm and sleep in her bed. I have always felt so guilty for getting mad about having to drive from Ray Roberts to Euless at 1 am that weekend.

Yeah, how ya supposed to know though? I do similar all the time - the great part about young kids is they forget soon enough.

I like going into the back yard and laying in a lounge chair with a book and something to drink. It's not very quiet since I'm next to a freeway and the dfw airport, but it's still relaxing and just back ground noise. I enjoy watching the planes over head, some of which are flying pretty low and booking it. Miss spending a lot of time like that back there with my dog.

I always have to have noise. If it's silent I start getting more and more anxious. I also cant sleep without noise because anything will wake me up. If I have a fan going I can sleep theough load exsplosions. But if it's silent Ill wake up becasue a car drove by.

My true point of peace is in a boat, decent breeze, anchored down and leaned back with a cold drink. I could be water, Dr. Pepper or my prefered beer. It doesn't matter, I will feel right within a short stent of time while hearing the water move. Any other time I am just being proactive or reactive. Damnit, now I want to go to the lake and it is too cold for that shit.

Wait, wasn't there a study in a sound absorbing room that most people couldn't last over an hour? This thread just made me think of that.

I was thinkin of an anechoic chamber as well. Until you've been in one of those alone...you don't know maddening silence. Quiet is one thing, and it's a nice thing...but silence is far from pleasant beyond a 30 minutes.

I love the silence in the mountains in the middle of the night, where it feels like your breathing is loud enough to be heard miles away.

A lot of people don't realize this about LA but there are literally thousands of hiking trails here, and most of them are generally within an hour (or less) drive from wherever you happen to live.

One of my favorite things to do to relax is to go hiking up in the San Gabriel mountains east of LA at 7,000 feet and just enjoy the solitude and the silence, and listen to the wind blowing thru the trees. When you are up there it's hard to remember that you are right outside LA.
