  • be careful out there hunting

I found out earlier that a friend's brother died from an accidental discharge while climbing into a deer stand. Be careful and check your safety.

Sad to hear but "check your safety?" Nothing should be in the chamber when climbing, going through fences, riding in trucks, etc.

I always have my gun unloaded and bolt open if I'm climbing into a stand or over/under a fence. Always be safe.

      RIP.

I never put one in the chamber till I'm sitting in the stand. I keep the bolt closed and un-cocked

He was holding the rifle for a guy that was climbing into the stand, after the guy got settled in the stand he was handing it back and the rifle discharged. Sad.

Damn, that's bad shit. You can be the safest person in the world, but it's someone elses mistake that usually costs you.

Around here, you have to keep one in the chamber while walking to the stand. However, once you're on your way to climbing, definitely clear the chamber.

Sad shit, man. I feel for the other dude and both families.

My uncle and cousin were hunting in Crockett once when a man came up asking for help. He "accidentally" shot his son-in-law in the head. My uncle helped them carry the body out of a very remote area.

I'm sure he was warned not to hurt his daughter.

That's the way it is where I hunt but I leave my bolt in the open position since I sling my rifle across my chest.

I was telling someone that I walk with a round chambered but always open the bolt and pocket the chambered round when I have to do anything that involves shuffling the rifle around. When I'm done, I'll drop that round back in and close the bolt.

Stevo, If you don't mind I'll discuss this with our Outdoor Ed class on Monday. This is one of the first things we talk about - crossing fences, climbing into a stand with a rifle. We have the kids use street hockey sticks for their rifles. Theres always a few who snicker and I get all over them so theyll take it seriously.

I bet they pay attention Monday.
