I have paid ridiculous amounts of money in medical bills in the last 4 years so I know how you feel. I usually just pay them a little amount till either I pay them off or until they make me an offer I can't refuse. I just got a new stack of medical bills the other day so the process for me starts over again.

So I guess my vote is keep paying them till they come down to where you want them.

Also they won't give up, I still had a bill from 08 that was $45 dollars that I told them to get fucked on. I finally settled for $20 last week so they would stop calling. Long story short was the doctor fucked up and I was sick for months and got a lot worse before getting the right test, so I didn't want to pay the damn $45 bucks.

Keep in mind that if they do agree to settle, you will likely get a 1099 for any amount they choose to write off. For example, if you still owe $10k and they settle for $3k, they will 1099 you for the $7k they write off, and you will have to claim that as taxable income.

Just figured I'd throw that out there to be factored in to any settlement.

You sure about this? I'd heard companies were trying to do that but never heard about it making it to an actual law.

Might depend on the state. Texas is very debtor friendly.

It was in Texas, this was back in 2003 if I remember correctly. He got a letter in the mail from the IRS, he ended up making payments until they took the rest out of the following years tax return. As for medical I have settled more than one time and have never had this happen. But I will admit that I have never had 7k taken off a balance, more in the 1k range at a time.

I'd set it up to have $25 taken out electronically every month. After a while, you won't even miss it. It can also help from them screwing your credit all up.

                              Yes on the 1099

I hired a guy as an agent, we fronted him $8500 to set up his office and in this case I think it was to pay green fees ..since he never did spit.

I tried to get him to refund, gave up ,called uncle and he got 1099.

Called me, told him to contact his tax attorney ..

A friend had a accident, no insurance or not enough can't remember which

He did the settle thing , seems they offer that near years end .

He paid , then got a bill from collections on the balance, they didn't play as nice ..he got taken to court, lost ..had to cough up balance fast

My take, its your debt, you incurred it .. pay it ..

why is that debt any different than anything else ?
