  • Parents...how or who decided on your kids sports?

Growing up I wasn't in sports. My Dad wasn't either so it just didn't pass down. I'm fine with that as he did a lot of other quality things with me. I would like my kids to be involved in some extracurricular physical activities though.

How did your kids start? Did you just sign them up for what you wanted them to do?

Did you play and talk with them on different sports to see if they had an interest?

    What ages and what sports?

Did they lose interest and how did you handle it?

My parents let me decide based on interests. Worked pretty well.

Just ask them what they want to do.
      Age around 7-8
Let them play as many sports as they want so they can find one that they like the best.

My parents let me choose. My dad likes baseball so he nudged me in that direction. For my sister and I it was baseball/ softball when younger, scouts, and later band. Did 4h for a few years as well. I am not interested in sports anymore so I won't push my son to that but he can do it if he wants to. I plan on getting him into shooting, camping, fishing, and stuff like that if he is interested. It will be his choice, ultimately.

Parents let me choose. I was in little league baseball, but I hated it. Eventually found tennis and I have been playing that sport for over half my life now.

try wrestling if you have boys. all boys like to wrestle and beat up on shit when theyre young, unless theyre gay.

i did it for a few years in HS and it was pretty fun.

the guy who said let them try different sports and see what they like best is right on the money. i started soccer and tee ball when i was 4-5. played baseball only until the first year of kid pitch, but soccer, i liked the best and eventually played club until my sophmore year of hs. then i decided partying and smoking weed was more important, so....

Both daughters chose the only sports I never played: soccer and volleyball. My oldest was 4 when she asked if she could play soccer with some other girls who were going to sign up. It was a good match for her. She played throughout college. I can't stress enough how important it is to get girls into some kind of sport.

They let me choose, and I think I chose based on what friends at school were playing.

I started at age 5 in 1st grade.

I've signed jr up for baseball, basketball, soccer, jiu jitsu. He will be 7 this month. Last weekend he took the silver in his weight class in a BJJ tourney. He loves the jiu jitsu and soccer. I believe he plays baseball because daddy loves it so much. Ive coached the soccer, baseball since like 3yrs old and tried the basketball but only for one season. Neither of us really liked it. What side of town you on??

                    God bless.

I gave my son the option to play anything I could sign him up for. He weeded out what he didn't like, even though he had to complete whatever sport he signed up for. The last couple of years, he has only played baseball and has upped his game drastically. I don't know if he'll continue after high school, but I'll help him with anything I can.

Denny got it right. Jr has been signed up for anything he showed any interest in. I think you have to expose kids to anything that is positive that might be of interest and let them decide.

I was told I'm not playing football because my dad wasn't waiting outside in the cold to watch a game and I wasn't playing baseball because it was to hot to sit outside and watch a bunch of people stand around. Pretty much any outdoor sport wasn't suggested. Being that my mother is of Canadian heritage, I chose hockey. Cool rink in the summer, not as miserably cold inside as it could be outside in the winter. Plus I liked it a lot more than any other sport.

That's how it worked for me.
