  • Anyone living in Austin?

Anyone here living in Austin currently?

Interested in possibility getting a studio apartment out there, something small and was curious if someone familiar with the area could toss out some names or places I should avoid/check out.

Your pockets better be deep if you want to live in a decent part of Austin proper. Austinites have seen the city go downhill (and even more liberal city council) in the last 15 years, and the invading Californians have even jumped on the "I remember when Austin...." bandwagon, which in turn, has seen the property values in the desirable parts of Austin skyrocket.

Just a word of caution before you look further.

Fully aware, this won't be my permanent place of living. It doesn't need to be completely high end or booshie as fuck. Just needs to be decent and safe.

And poopnut lives south of Austin, which is booming, too. You get cheaper land, but you still have to suffer the traffic if you travel into Austin for work.

What area would be closest for work/play/whatever you will be there for? I can recommend some apts in central Austin or south Austin if you will be anywhere in the area.

I used to live off of Mopac (Loop 1) and 183. E it was called Far West. Pretty nice area with affordable apartments, and a lot of houses where you can sometimes find good deals on renting a room out.

A good rule of thumb is to stay West of North Lamar. The area East of there is pretty shady.

A room would be good, I don't think I would be moving any of my stuff. I probably will buy a bed/table and two desks and take my pc's and a server with me down there.

Don't need a ton of sq footage either, half my time will more than likely be spent in Dallas if everything goes to plan.

Not sure about hipsters. I lived in North Austin back in 2006 and delivered pizzas all around the area. East of Lamar was "ghetto" as hell. Might also wanna check the Balcones Woods area. Pretty nice as well but probably a little more expensive.

Make no mistake, it's still ghetto. However, property values are starting to go up on the east side of 35 due to hipsters, homosexuals, and hipster homosexuals buying up the shitty houses and fixing them up and running off the ghetto folk with their flamboyancy.

If the idea is sound, the pieces will be that of the wall.
