If you do buy from a big box store, you need to know where you can get this thing serviced if something happens. When I was shopping around I asked several John Deere dealers about servicing stuff from a big box and their answer was good luck because they didn't make a dime on that sale and some of them can't stand competition they get from the big boxes. They will still fix it but it might not be a priority for them.

Joezgarage says that there is a dealer in GP that preps JDs for sale at Lowes. That may be the place you have to go for service. So make sure you ask before buying and know exactly what you have to do when something breaks.

I have a Toro TimeCutter SS4535 that I bought from Lowery and it has been flawless for the last year. I have an acre (3/4th if you subtract the house) and it takes about half an hour to mow it with all the obstacles. I believe the list price is $2500.

The service thing is a good point. I see a few complaints on the reviews about customers who had issues with getting their Lowe's or Home Depot mower serviced.

Definitely can't drop $4700 on one. I wonder what the difference is in the $2700 Home Depot lower line is?

Bought my Gravely from Main street mower in Waxahachie. I bought the HD 48 and its a bad mother. One acre in 35 minutes at half speed. You can jump on the deck and it doesnt budge. I think 4800 out the door but had zero percent for 6 month and I just paid it off quick. My buddy has a cub 52 and it beats the crap out of you and wont climb big hills near as easy either.

As stated above, make sure you buy something that you can get serviced and parts are available for in your area. That being said, both my units are used. I've got a commercial Husqvarna with 61" inch cut, bought it 3 years old with 900 hours from our local farm store for $4000 cash. It was a trade in from my, at the time, girlfriends dad. I knew the machine and how he took care of things. We picked up a second mower a couple months ago from the same store. A base grade commercial Gravely, 52" cut, 250 hours for $2300 cash and used an ag exempt on the taxes.

I take care of some family owned properties for my Grandmother. I try to do it as quickly and efficiently as possible. A good heavy duty mower is what I required to accomplish this.

I'd personally look at a used machine like the Gravely we bought if you feel comfortable not buying new. You get a heavier deck, heavier bearings and carriers, usually a larger motor, better pump and hydraulic motors, etc. The down side is you generally aren't going to get any kind of a warranty by doing this. I do all the maintenance and repairs on mine so a service center isn't a priority for me, however being able to get parts is. I just stocked up on some of the items I've had issues with on my Husqvarna because our local farm store will not be handling their parts in the near future.

                Just my 2 cents.

Mine is a Gravely also...totally agree here, it literally cut my mowing time by half going from my old Husqvarna Tractor. Mine is the commercial series with the suspension seat, and I'm very glad I went with that option now. It has the 24hp commercial grade Kawasaki as well, and it'll go through tall grass (even wet) without a flinch. IIRC, both the deck and all of the spindles have a lifetime warranty too.

I got mine for $4200 (pretax), but it was the previous year's model and they made it a little better deal on cash too. I do recall that they had some great financing options as well, if you want to go that route.

I've done 2 seasons with it now, and my only regret is that I didn't step up on one of these earlier.

No, it's the biggest one they had, but my property is very bumpy in places, which forces me to slow down and there are a lot of precision areas.

Getting it serviced? It's a damn mower and this is a car site. If you can't service a mower you probably need to surrender your balls. Just sayin
