For the kind of money they pay us out here it is a crime.
I can understand the plumber making $100,000 a year over here not knowing the difference but for our managers to not it just makes me cringe.Originally posted by Yale View PostUsage mistakes are the errors that really bother me. The worst is when people try to repeat a saying, and have obviously never seen it written down, so they mangle it. I think that's what's disappointing, that a lot of folks just don't read anymore, so they don't know how to write or even talk like an adult.Originally posted by helosailor View PostFor the most part, I look at it in the context of the situation.
When it is informal, it doesn't bother me as much. However, like Keith mentioned, when it is a situation where someone would be expected to present a professional and knowledgeable image, it is beyond frustrating.
Spell check and grammar check are good tools to have, but they shouldn't be relied on 100%. When a word is spelled correctly but used in the wrong manner is just as bad. ("Go pick up too dozen Bartlett pairs from the produce department and way them")
Of course I'm not completely OCD about it. An occasional slip is understandable. But when you get people like Mr. EDD, who would make a second grader shake their head, trying to be taken seriously...well, that's just not going to happen.Originally posted by talisman View PostCompany email with higher-ups drives me batshit. How can you run a multi billion dollar company and not put together a fucking paragraph? The rest of the time, I notice it, but let it slide unless it is reaaaaally bad. Like dipshits that actually type out that they "seen" something instead of "saw" it.
Try taking a victim statement and asking them if they can read, write, and understand the English language, and then get handed a hand-written statement that looks like a 6 year old wrote it. That statement will be scrutinized by a judge, jury, and defense attorney.
It's even worse when you read an officer's report and it has errors. As mid-management, I tend to make corrections instead of sending it up as it was.

If it only applied to informal messages, etc. it wouldn't bother me, but it doesn't stay here. It becomes habit and when people use shorthand or have grammatical errors on here or in text messages and it carries over when they're asking me to get them a job or some other professional help. If you can make the distinction good for you, but that has not been my experience.

When I sell parts (or anything for that matter), I have developed the following strategy:
- Post parts for sale
- Wait 24-48 hours before responding to any e-mails, PMs, etc
- Find the message with the best spelling, grammar, and sentence structure and reply to it first.
My theory is that anyone who can write a coherent sentence probably has a job and therefore has money. The aforementioned job also means that they don't have the time to fuck me around on shipping, meeting at JITB, endless idiotic questions, etc.
It's a strategy that has worked quite well over the years.- Darrell

An occasional typo here or there on a message board is fine, imo. Hell, I've made a handful over the years. A poorly written message in a professional environment will immediately discredit an otherwise competent author. I see some of the memos drafted by our competition and they are terrible. These notes are written by authors with stellar academic backgrounds (people with a Harvard, Wharton, U of Chicago education...in addition to holding a CFA/CPA designation). I know exactly what Asset Managers who use equity research think of this. The head of the legal department at one of my old jobs used to send memos to every client we had that read, "If you have any further questions, please contact _______ or myself." I used to cringe every time I read it.Last edited by slow99; 01-24-2011, 08:09 PM.Originally posted by davbrucasI want to like Slow99 since people I know say he's a good guy, but just about everything he posts is condescending and passive aggressive.
Most people I talk to have nothing but good things to say about you, but you sure come across as a condescending prick. Do you have an inferiority complex you've attempted to overcome through overachievement? Or were you fondled as a child?
You and slow99 should date. You both have passive aggressiveness down pat.

In class group project in my ethics class tonight. We're supposed to compare religion to morals, and I tell the girl that is writing our responses that "People use the guise of religion to do terrible things." She writes down "Men" in the place of guise. I don't know what to do without sounding like a total cock. Finally I say, that word should be guise, as in g-u-i-s-e. She has no idea what I'm talking about. She thought I meant people use the guys of religion to do terrible things.

If an adult makes spelling pattern errors like my fourth graders, I usually get pretty bent out of shape.

I have to read technician request all day. Most of them are so bad you people would put a gun in your mouth and pull the trigger (judging by how worked up some of you get). I am so used to having to decode that crap I have no problems with anyone else outside of work.
