Spelling/Grammar and your Opinion of People...

when you are on a message board, receiving e-mail, snail mail, text messages, so on, so forth, etc...

does it change your opinion of a person when they seem to have no clue when it comes to spelling and grammar?

does it make them seem lazy when spell check and grammar check are readily available in most cases?

it changes my opinion of a person, as i try to be very conscious of these things.

(and yes, i am aware of my lack of capitalization in this post)

I have the great pleasure of reading statements from our employees that can not compose sentences as simple as "I see Jane is wearing a red dress". You can forget about the proper usage of "where, were, wear, war" and "two, too and to". Hell, I work for managers that submit official government reports and they too are retarded. For the kind of money they pay us out here it is a crime.

I can understand the plumber making $100,000 a year over here not knowing the difference but for our managers to not it just makes me cringe.

Usage mistakes are the errors that really bother me. The worst is when people try to repeat a saying, and have obviously never seen it written down, so they mangle it. I think that's what's disappointing, that a lot of folks just don't read anymore, so they don't know how to write or even talk like an adult.

For the most part, I look at it in the context of the situation.
When it is informal, it doesn't bother me as much. However, like Keith mentioned, when it is a situation where someone would be expected to present a professional and knowledgeable image, it is beyond frustrating.
Spell check and grammar check are good tools to have, but they shouldn't be relied on 100%. When a word is spelled correctly but used in the wrong manner is just as bad. ("Go pick up too dozen Bartlett pairs from the produce department and way them")

Of course I'm not completely OCD about it. An occasional slip is understandable. But when you get people like Mr. EDD, who would make a second grader shake their head, trying to be taken seriously...well, that's just not going to happen.

Company email with higher-ups drives me batshit. How can you run a multi billion dollar company and not put together a fucking paragraph? My favorite is at school on blackboard when people are posting discussions and spew incoherent, unreadable ramblings that are filled with grammar and spelling errors.

There are some students that are absolutely there because diversity is promoted.

One of the things that prompted me to reenroll in college was the quality of other people I see with 4 year degrees. I can get a Bachelors in Liberal Arts and look like a rocket scientist next to some of these mouth breathers. If they can do it, I saw no reason why I didn't have a degree.

I've seen a few people on here say "mine as well" in place of "might as well." :|

Simple Typos in a chat or forum board do not really bother me. Even emails between 2 people does not bother me when there are grammatical emails.

It bothers me when I see a mass formal email sent out with mistakes.

I received a commendation from the base commander. He sent it to his higher ups and my Sr. VP (I was copied). Reading it, I could count mistake after mistake. It was horrible; so bad, that it took away from the whole meaning of the recognition in the first place.
