  • Jeep Wrangler Towing

I was thinking about getting a used Wrangler and have heard they are underpowered. I am going to tow a atv trailer with 2 four wheelers 1700-1800lbs and didn't know if anyone had any personal experience. I was thinking of the wrangler with the 4.0 or the 4.2 I-6. Let the vast knowledge of the NEW Dfw.mustangs begin.

never had a jeep before, but 1800lbs isn't really anything to worry about. i'd just make sure to get an actual hitch put on, a buddy at work had a '04 and the bumper on that was sooooooo flimsy it wasn't even funny. and like anything get it leveled right so it doesn't want to pop wheelies with such a short wheelbase.

Bah, you won't have any trouble at all. The low tow rating on the Jeep is more due to the short wheelbase then the power of the engine. When I had mine I pulled various toys and never had a problem. Now gas mileage, that will suck, but it'll pull fine! I had a 99 TJ with the I6.

I used to always drive my ex's parents' jeep. I towed 2 jetskis through the hill country and out to the lake all summer, no problems with the 4.0. Just leave the transmission in 4th, and you'll be fine.

          Shouldn't be a problem

The 4.0 I6 is a workhorse and honestly I think it was a mistake to go to the smaller V6 they offer now. That weight wont' be a problem though. As said, the lower rating is due to the wheelbase. My old 2000 Sahara had a 4" lift, ran 33's w/stock gears (3.73 I think) and I towed jetski's all the time with it. Though, it would struggle in 5th (even some in 4th on steep hills) and 75-80mph was about top speed. You don't want to go faster than that towing on the hwy anyway though.

It was to save money. It's the same basic engine as what they use in the minivans and the Pacifica, not much power and terrible fuel economy. It is a better engine than the 3.7 in the Liberty though.

Well, if it craps out, use one of the 4 wheelers to tow the jeep and trailer back home!

I have an 08, 2dr. wrangler and its a turd. I as well tow an atv trailer with mine but only with one quad. Being an auto I have to turn off OD on the Hwy. or it will slow down significantly going up any type of hill. As soon as I get the chance I am doing the hemi conversion. There are some real nice kits out there that make it a breeze. I love the jeep and I knew it was a turd when I bought it with the intention of one day doing the hemi swap.
