So if I am reading this right, San Francisco wants you to risk damaging your tire? It actually costs you points (30 if I am not mistaken) from your driving test in Texas if you hit the curb during the parallel parking portion.

blocking the sidewalk with your vehicle is usually against city ordinances at least it is in Detroit because I seen it on parking wars. blocking the sidewalk is usually considered a safety violation

You don't have to hit the curb while you're parking - you park then turn your wheels toward or away from the curb when parking on a hill as I learned how to do it here in TX driver's ed. Virtually every street in SF is a steep hill.

Most people I talk to have nothing but good things to say about you, but you sure come across as a condescending prick. Do you have an inferiority complex you've attempted to overcome through overachievement? Or were you fondled as a child?

You and slow99 should date. You both have passive aggressiveness down pat.

Oh ok, that makes alot more sense than what I pictured in my head when I read the original post.

I didn't explain it that well ... SF has signs all over the place saying to "curb your wheels" when parking so I didn't really think that people here wouldn't be familiar with that verbiage.

I've heard / known about the tickets for parking the wrong direction and blocking the sidewalk since I was a kid. They always enforced those where I grew up in CA.

The parking the wrong direction, particularly on a residential street, is absolutely stupid IMO. I can understand the blocking the sidewalk thing though. It's such a PITA to have to go around a dozen cars while walking down the sidewalk on one residential block.

Of course my street doesn't even have sidewalks. I honestly didn't even realize they were missing until after buying and moving in. It does allow me to legally fit 4 cars in the driveway though.

Tires pointed to the curb when parking on a hill makes absolute sense to me, and was definitely taught / tested in drivers ed when I took it 23 years ago. Parking brake on a mostly flat surface with an automatic transmission is something I never do. Here in flat-ass Texas I probably engage my parking brake 3 times in a year.

This is why I live in the country. I drive a manual and the only time I use the parking brake is if I am on a hill.

When I had a manual, particularly with a hand brake, I always engaged it. But that was typically because I left the transmission in neutral. I would leave it in gear plus the handbrake if on a hill though.

I'm the opposite, I leave it in gear, but no hand brake unless I am on a hill. I used to never use it on an automatic, but my 70 cougar had a bad habit of slipping out of park....

I didn't like leaving them in gear because I had a bad habit of immediately letting off the clutch after starting it. Caused a few close calls. lol

I did have an auto once that was bad about falling out of park. So that one always had the parking brake set.

Glad I am not the only moron that does that.

I don't have that problem. I am the moron that is looking for the clutch pedal when I try to start an automatic.

Haha. I didn't even own my first automatic until I had been driving for 15 years or so. I learned on a manual, and the first time I drove an automatic (in driver's ed) I hit the "clutch" (ie brake pedal) several times to shift to second. Almost gave the teacher whiplash. Lol.
