The stock air box, and the stock headers/cats are amazingly efficient on these cars, and unless you're wringing the last hp out of one, changing either one is simply not needed. I ran axlebacks and a canned tune from VMP on my car at MIR 2 years ago, and with nothing else other than a set of 275/60 DR's, went 12 flat at 116. The stock stuff is pretty good.

    Good to hear

I'm with you. Just not worth it. Getting shit fixed free sounds a lot better to me (didn't mean to rhyme)

I am aware of at least one engine replaced on a car that Ford knew was tuned (not mine). But all it takes is talking in the wrong tone to a service writer and you're screwed. I'd rather not chance it.

My car has been 12.2 @ 114.5 without a tune, without a CAI, and slammed on 20s. I'll just wait until it's out of drivetrain warranty (80k miles) before I do anything to it.

haha, true dat. In police circles, it's known as being guilty of "Having a bad attitude."

You don't have to tune a CAI, but the benefit is far better, thus being more worth it.

Most people I talk to have nothing but good things to say about you, but you sure come across as a condescending prick. Do you have an inferiority complex you've attempted to overcome through overachievement? Or were you fondled as a child?

You and slow99 should date. You both have passive aggressiveness down pat.

Just curious, how big are the headers on these cars?

                • Bert, here's a really good article about the coyote engines.

They don't mention how "big" the exhaust manifolds are, but they do explain some of the design reasons behind why the stockers work so well. If you're thinking about headers, ask some people that run them what they think about the cost benefit.

Cool. I'm not, just asking questions. I know jack shit about these cars. Never paid any attention to what they do or what all is on them until now. So it's like i'm 18 all over again when I first got my '89 coupe

yes it was, Danny. How nice of you to remind me

                        • All of Danny's info is spot on. The K&N's do not give any power and they do lose some, I'm assuming it requires a tune. I put one in and went back to the paper filter. I run 87 octane only, I've read the manual front to back and I don't see any reason to run 93. With that being said it does run better with 93 but it is my DD so I'm rarely getting on it.
So far from a roll I've beat a 2013 Subi WRX, BMW 335i tt and last Saturday I got the jump on a Vette (not a 2014) on 121 and he never passed me up to 130mph.
These cars will get up and move, I only have the GT500 AB on mine.

                          • So I should save my money and not put the K&N on the car that I bought last night?

and thanks for that article, Danny, I enjoyed reading that.

Nope, I went out and put one in (it was like $60.00 too) and took it back out in a month or so. I could tell the car wasn't running right. I put in the factory paper filter back in and could tell right away it was running better. Ford has squeezed every single ounce of power from the Coyote 4v in stock form, no need for anything unless you are going to do a CAI with a tune.
My car only has the GT500 AB and the aluminum driveshaft is next. Once it goes out of warranty I'll be putting in a throttle body, CAI and tune. Should be enough until I save enough for a KB 2.8 LC blower...
