  • Headed to NYC in December...need some recs

My girl and I are gonna try another trip this year...last year that super storm came through and we canceled. I am pretty sure we are going to stay at the Marriott Marquis in Times Square, but I wouldnt mind some suggestions on must-dos while there. Obviously the WTC monument, Statue of Liberty, etc...

Also, so recs on some nice places to eat and listen to live music within walking distance of our hotel. Any info is appreciated.

    Headed up there Dec 18-23rd.

Eataly. If you like Italian food, this is a great place. It's an indoor Italian market/fish market/Meat Market with 4 different restaurants inside. A must do.

Go see all of the landmarks of course. Walk the Brooklyn Bridge, see the Empire State building, Top of the Rock (30 Rock).

Statue of Liberty requires a reservation like weeks in advance though to go inside, but you can still go around the island.

Heli tour, food, guggenheim, shops, get stabbed, get asked for money every ten seconds.

Look into a VRBO in the Upper East Side. Much better option than the hustle and bustle of times square (which is bright as day all the time).

<-------goes to NYC about every other week.

                  Playwright for drinks.

Cafe Water at Water/Pine St. Great buffet.
Flat Iron district, galleries in Chelsea, The Metropolitan, FAO Schwartz.

Really though, my advice would be to stay away from the tourist destinations and find the real city.

We are heading up there Oct 4, I'll let you know what we find too. We are gonna stay at the Hilton Millennium, so we are real close to the memorial.

                          The tourist stuff
                          • Empire State Building (weather dependent)
                          • WTC
                          • St. Pauls Chapel across from Ground Zero
                          • Rockefeller Center / Tree
                          • 5th Avenue
                          • Grand Central Station
                          • Wall Street
                          • Central Park
                          • The Guggenheim (check to see what the exhibit is)
                          • Museum of Natural History
                          • MoMA
                          • Statue of Liberty (will take several hours)
                          • China Town / Canal St

A helicopter tour of Manhattan and including the Statue of Liberty is a good bet. For all of the other tourist stuff your best bet is to block it off and do things by area.

                          Food (too many options)
                          • Daniel
                          • Eataly
                          • Da Silvano
                          • Il Punto
                          • Serendipity3 (for her)
                          • Keens (a must)
                          • Trattoria Dell Arte
                          • Dos Caminos
                          • Rosa Mexicano
                          • Scarpetta
                          • Le Bernadin

Reservations for some of the much nicer places will book 60 days in advance.

                          Bars
                          • The rotating bar at the top of the Marriott Marquis is actually not bad
                          • The Playwright
                          • The Rose Bar (in the Gramercy Park Hotel)
                          • The Dead Rabbit

Most of the better bars I have been to are down in SoHo, Tribeca and the Flatiron area. You really can't go wrong with most of them. Oh, and for live music stuff around the Marquis, it's very hit or miss as it changes often. I just use the concierge for that stuff and never really get let down if it's something close you're looking for. I stumbled into the Mean Fiddler one afternoon which is actually on the opposite side of the block from the Marquis (47th & 8th) and had a great time. While walking around, just make note of where some interesting places are around the hotel (there are a ton).

I'll be in NYC the week before you guys.
