  • Cake bite conundrum

I am looking for some consumer insight. I have wanted to update my cake bite packaging for some time. I believe you guys all got the plain white candy boxes. These resulted in a lot of wasted space, making it harder to store large quantities to fill orders. I found two solutions that better fit my needs. One is a shorter square box that fits 6 cake bites better. It is solid brown "card board" packaging. The other solution is frosted plastic. I found brown frosted containers with clear window lids. The problem is that I haven't found a solution in this product line that will fit 6 cake bites properly. I have found a package that fits 4 ct perfectly. One upside to this is better travel during delivery.

What I am looking at is either boxes of 6 or boxes of four.

A lot of people have mentioned that one is plenty! So I am thinking moving to 4 ct won't affect sales too much.

With the cost of production going up the options would be

    6 ct/$8
    4 ct/$5

My thoughts on seeing this post without seeing or knowing anything about what you're currently doing.

    1) If I buy 6, it should cost less per cake bite or the same at a minimum -- not more. I don't care what packaging you use. That's how I'm going to think.

    2) If a consumer is trying to decide on how many to buy over a certain quantity, they're going to go with the lower number if you're letting people know one is enough. For example, if I was expecting 20 people at a party, my first thought is have 1 per person minimum. Without knowing your information, I would at a minimum get 24 if not 30 cake bites. At your above prices, that's either $32 or $40 purchase. Now, with the 4/6 packaging and your statement, I'll probably just get 20 cake bites max which is 5 boxes at $5 or $25. You just lost sales. Short sentence: don't offer 4/6 packaging. Offer 2/6 or 4/8, etc.

    3) Is a clear window lid important? I don't know if you have walk-in type retail that needs visible packaging. Will the buyer use the packaging to display/serve the cake bites or will they go on a platter? If packaging with visibility isn't important, then I wouldn't get it if it has a higher cost.

    4) Have you looked at a box without a top and then using plastic wrap to cover/seal it? Then you could stack them in some sort of a carry crate/box to transport. You could stack the boxes by rotating each level 90 degrees so they are supported and won't crush the cake bites.

Just some quick thoughts, but again, I don't know anything about what you're doing now or the cake industry either.

Go for the 4 count. It comes off as a better deal and if someone wants more, they can add multiple orders

The fancy packaging was a nice touch but I "personally" would have been fine with the cheapest easiest packaging that you could do. But a woman on the other hand......

People pay more for product in upscale packaging, and that's a fact. However, not having a retail store, I wouldn't worry about it if I were you.

You need to market them like they are illegal drugs, figure out how to do that and you will be a bazillionaire.

Or do a four count in fancy packaging, the ones I got last time lasted us a while.

I will post pictures when I get to a computer.

A couple of things here, I wont sell them as either/or it will be one or the other. I am more concerned with the quantity in the package, is 4 enough basically.

When I consult for parties or large groups, I suggest people plan fo 1.5 bites per guest. Of course, a half of a bite isn't rational since they are bite sized, however, they are rich and a lot of people prefer no more than 1 per sitting.

I do local ebents where my product is displayed. Presentation has always been a concern of mine. I am of the mindset that to be successful in a retail type setting the little details like presentation can make or break you.

              Thank you for the input!

I do some festivals and community events, as well as facebook marketing, so I feel the more professional packaging helps.

Now if I could just get the website finished!...

This is the reason I have entertained the 4 ct packaging.

Another note on the 4 ct. It gives me the bump in price to offset cost and keep the $5 price point which seems to be the hot button for these in my area.

and I'll take 8 right now

and the box of 4 would fit in the fridge better too

The wife just said she wants some for the 13th of October for her birthday party, 2dozen, let me know what flavors she can choose from.

She liked the packaging for the 4ct better.

$5 for 4 in fancy packaging, $8 for 8 in a ziplock bag?
