I vote on fixing the old one but I am an odd ball . My daily is a 00 and I wouldn't dream of taking on a payment . I was pissed when the wife wanted to sell the explorer to get a new car . Luckily she took the new car and the payment when she left (good riddens to both) . I do all my own repairs so that keeps maintenance cost at rock bottom so it just makes sense for me to drive old cars . I also don't give a crappy if my car is dumpy (see what I did there) . I understand the lure of a new one but the price is more of a beating then the repairs to me . Plus you already have history with the car and know what you are dealing with . No brainer for my cheap ass .
This here. I daily the 86, my 02 ranger hasn't been driven in damn near a year.
If you like the car I say keep it. Doesn't sound like what needs to be fixed is major and sure would beat new car payments if all you needed to invest is $2K.

this would be a much more difficult decision if you didn't like the car you're in. You said yourself it's the best daily you've ever owned. Fixing it just means you make it even better. Why start over?
No shit right here. Just because you get something "newer" to you, doesn't necessarily mean it will be a better car.
Just don't get one of those fancy new F-150's with the squeaky seat option !

Look on craigslist for a set of tires
Look ok craigslist/eBay/G35 forums for suspension
Rattle can or plastidip the paint
And be payment free

When I added up that I had spent 3k in work on my 99 vert last year in 6 months, and it left me stranded twice, I decided it was time to pull the trigger on something new. Of course, I never was overly in love with that car; it was a means to an end at the time I bought it. That said, it had about 140k on it, and I wasn't sure how long it would be before it needed something again. A car at that age will almost always need "something." For a daily driver, I felt it was time to move on.
Do car payments suck? Fuck yes. Does being in your late 30's, stranded on the side of the road while you're trying to get to work in some old pile suck worse? That's up to you to decide. Every time I walk into my garage and get in the drivers seat and wrap my right hand around that 6 speed shifter knob, I get a huge grin on my face.
Get rid of it. Depending on the shape of all the paint, whether it can be blended or painting the whole thing it would be at least 4K if not more. Buy something else that is newer and the sentiment for the old car will diminish quickly.
