        and worse than that, when the next job application is filled out, there are usually blanks for the starting and ending pay.

        The ending pay needs to be accurate. If the new employer runs the work history check, it will come up with a discrepancy. Not good.

        If the form is filled out accurately with the low ending pay rate, the hiring person will see a low final pay number. Also, not good.

                      True story. It was stressed over and over in our policy at a previous gig that we were not to answer any questions other than if they did work for us and if they were rehireable.

                        I'm aware of that; ours do as well. I'm referring to him getting an previous employer to actually tell him what a potential candidates actual salary was. Most of the time all you can even get is "Yes, they worked here these dates. Goodbye." Unless you have some rinky dink dumbass on the other end of the phone that doesn't realize he is opening his company up to litigation. Which would be unusual, because most companies of any decent size are going to have an educated HR Department that would know better. This stuff would be first day on the job training for them not to answer those questions.
