  • Local High School Student Fatally Shot

Some of you may know him or his family. He was a "friend of a friend" of mine. Be careful hunting guys.

A high school football player has been killed in a shooting incident northwest of Denton.

In a news release, Montague County Sheriff Paul Cunningham confirmed 18-year-old Nathan Maki, starting fullback for Denton Guyer High School, was found dead in a pickup up truck in a field close to Bowie.

Authorities made the discovery after receiving a call at about 11:30 p.m. Saturday.

Maki was later pronounced dead at Bowie Hospital.

According to friend and teammate Tyler Smith, Maki had been hunting with friends during the opening weekend of dove hunting season.

Smith said he believes his friend was shot accidentally.

The sheriff's office reports that a rifle was found at the scene.

“He always used to talk about, 'I’m the safest guy around, guys. You’ll never catch me messing around'…For this to happen to him, it’s just a heartbreaker," Smith said.

Smith said while Maki did not start in his fullback position on the Wildcat's Thursday night season opener due to an injury, football was his friend's passion.

“He was always in the huddle, listening to the plays, even if he wasn’t playing," said Smith.

Girlfriend Peyton Bucklew called Maki her "best friend," but added that Maki's Class 4A state champion teammates were "like family."

“Football was everything to him," she said, saying that during the team's next Thursday game, the varsity squad will be playing for Maki.

"Those are his brothers out there," Bucklew said. "He would do anything for them. It will be hard, but I know Thursday they are going to go out there and play for him.”

Bucklew called the shooting a "tragedy."

According to Cunningham's statement, an arrest was made at the scene of the shooting on unrelated charges.

Authorities have not released any further information, other than it remains an open investigation and that the Texas Rangers are involved.

A statement posted on a team website and on Facebook reads: "Our team, school, community, and most of all the family of Nate Maki, have suffered a great loss." It asks for supporters' prayers. Additionally, the team announced Monday that they will not practice on Labor Day.

The article kind of sucks. What a shitty way to write an article like that. It reads like he was shot by one of his buddies out dove hunting and they left him there. Says police "found dead in a pickup truck" after receiving a call. Call was at 11:30pm. That is way past sundown.

Sorry he is gone. People be safe out there. Know where everyone is before you start swinging that shotgun around and blasting birds.
Fuck you. We're going to Costco.

It was the night before opening day. Supposedly the kids were camping out and were going to hunt that next morning.

Edit. Here is the local news link on it.

Funeral arrangements are now set for a teen the Montague County Sheriff's Office believe was accidentally shot and killed by a friend.

Montague County Sheriff Paul Cunningham says it appears 18-year-old Denton Guyer High School football player Nathan Maki was accidentally shot by his friend, 17-year-old Michael Bryce Underwood, and says at this time, he says there is no evidence of this being an intentional shooting.

"Our hearts and prayers go out to all the families involved in this tragic incident and that's exactly what it is, a very tragic incident that occurred," Cunningham says.

He says on Saturday night, deputies were called out to shooting in a pasture off Mueller and Well Service Roads.

When they arrived, they found Maki inside a truck with a gunshot wound to the head.

Maki was transported to Bowie Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Cunningham says Underwood was the only one on scene along with a shot gun and rifle.

He says he believes a shot from the rifle is what killed Maki.

"We believe at this point that Mr. Underwood was holding the weapon at the time it discharged," Cunningham says. "They were camping out at the scene. They were there to go dove hunting the next day and that's the reason they had the fire arms."

Cunningham says Underwood was arrested and charged with Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor and transported to the Montague County jail but has since bonded out.

He says two females were also on scene but fled because they were scared.

Funeral services for Maki are set for on Thursday at 11 a.m. at Timbers Church in Argyle.

Sad deal for sure. That is what happens when you play with guns.

We had a kid shot in the head by a revolver in High School. During lunch a group were at a kids house and two of them went into the back room. Only one came out on his own two feet. The other one had a gunshot wound to the temple - dead. No charges filed. Ruled an accident. Never trusted the other kid after that. He was a dirt bag before and a dirt bag afterwards.

Heard about that on the radio the day before yesterday. Damned radio person used it as a mild attempt at indicating gun control is good. Anyway, I hate to hear about hunting type accidents. I did not read most of the article above, but apparently there were witnesses that agreed it was an accident.

Damned shame, follow the golden rules folks.

Think so, on the radio they indicated shotgun. Depending on who is wrong, maybe they were going to do some hog hunting. Details, we don't have them.

saw this on the news the other day and thought the same thing. You would think, though, that the Sherriff's office could tell the difference between a rifle and a shotgun.

Second article says shotgun and a rifle.
