Lot of VW lovers in here. Side note back in the day owned a GTI VR6 two door. Loved that little car.

Well we ruled out the Passat TDI. Kept hearing people talk about service.

        40k miles...DSG trans service $400
        40-50k miles....$500

Steering wheel not centered to drivers seat.

Just seems like you are paying more to save on fuel then turn around and get hosed on the cost of service.

Still not decided on what to get for a daily driver but we better figure it out quick. Our old daily driver (2011 CRV) sold today. It was okay. But not "fun to drive", not great mpg's, and just not a lot of things. It was a good vehicle, just not great in any one area.

Man I wish they made a WRX in an auto!! Just want a car that is fun to drive, scoots along and gets 35 mpg's in town and 50 on the road and is practical. Guess that is to much to ask for...lol

You can do the service yourself for far cheaper. My DSG service was $150ish including buying necessary tooling. Same thing with 10k oil changes.

So will whatever other car you look at not need a trans service? and how much do they cost for other cars?

on a side note gas 3.06 Diesel 3.69 tonight.

We had an 04 Accord that we kept until 152k miles. The only thing we ever did was oil changes and a set of tires at 85k miles. We traded it in on the CRV.

My Mustang is a standard and driving it in traffic is getting old. They were fun 20 years ago but not so much anymore.

It had intervals of service just as a vw does. It may not cost as much but it had it weather you choose to do it or not.

In all seriousness, a 4 banger has a MUCH lighter clutch, and newer ones require almost zero pedal effort.

<---- will always row my own gears.

So in theory if the TDI is about ~$3700 more than a similarly equipped SE it would take about 800,000 miles to offset the initial cost.

Now there is the argument that a TDI will have better residual value. Looking at values after 5 years and 80,000 miles, here is what I found. When looking a KBB I compared the two and it was a 32.5% loss in value on the TDI and a 39.8% loss on the SE with a difference in amount lost being about $200.

When you factor in having to do 2 separate 40,000 mile transmission fluid and filter changes on the TDI at about $400-$500 each the gas SE Jetta becomes a better value for MOST people. If you actually think you will put 1 million miles on a vehicle then the TDI can be a better value but I don't see that happening.

I'm all for editing this for more and better content and willing to be proven wrong, just show me your numbers and I'll be happy to fix anything I messed up.
I guess a tdi doesnt make sense with gas 2.99 and diesel 3.65?

but gas only getting 26-30 mpg (avg mpg of most models) vs. tdi pulling in 40+mpg.....think the extra 65 cents is covered. I know my boss is pull 46mpg out of his.

We picked up our TDI a couple of weeks ago. The first tank was our normal back and fourth to work and around town. We got 42.4 on that first tank over 600 miles of travel (still showed 70 mile range left). We went to Amarillo over the past weekend and got 44 mpg on the trip up. Now it has about 1500 miles on it. I think once it loosens up we will see an increase.

So far we are glad we backed out on the Accord Sport and spent the extra money for the TDI. Even if we never offset the cost difference in mpg savings. The TDI is more fun to drive, the ride is better and the interior feels bigger.
