I've been reading up on TDi's for a couple of years now and I think whenever I'm ready for a new(ish) DD I'll be looking at a VW.
I know the TDi's get a higher gas mileage but the fuel also cost more. Never put much thought into it but which is more economical to run?

1. Do you want diesel? I don't think all stations sell it. They do around here, but out and about I've seen plenty not sell it.
2. Which motor or vehicle has cheaper long term maintenance costs?Originally posted by MR EDDU defend him who use's racial slurs like hes drinking water.

I did the math based on epa estimates and over the course of 100,000 miles you would only save about $500 in fuel costs on a Jetta TDI when comparing it to a Jetta SE.
So in theory if the TDI is about ~$3700 more than a similarly equipped SE it would take about 800,000 miles to offset the initial cost.
Now there is the argument that a TDI will have better residual value. Looking at values after 5 years and 80,000 miles, here is what I found. When looking a KBB I compared the two and it was a 32.5% loss in value on the TDI and a 39.8% loss on the SE with a difference in amount lost being about $200.
When you factor in having to do 2 separate 40,000 mile transmission fluid and filter changes on the TDI at about $400-$500 each the gas SE Jetta becomes a better value for MOST people. If you actually think you will put 1 million miles on a vehicle then the TDI can be a better value but I don't see that happening.
I'm all for editing this for more and better content and willing to be proven wrong, just show me your numbers and I'll be happy to fix anything I messed up.

Today is the second smallest gap I've seen this year in diesel/gas local to me at $.56.
At that spread it would have to be extremely economical, two weeks ago it was over it was $.70, 3.29 reg and 3.99 diesel.
I know I'll get argued with, but a prius C for $20k will get you 46 hwy on regular, and a $15k fiesta will get you 41 hwy. If all highway the fiesta is a better deal, if stop and go driving is common it goes to 53 mpg prius to 31 mpg feista, which will eventually cover the $5K difference.

I have a '12 passat TDI SEL, we regularly get 44MPG driving 75-80 mph. Rear seat leg room is huge, this was important for us. Around town 38 MPG. She was driving an SRT-10 Ram @ 9MPG, This thing pays for itself. Wife drives 60 miles per day. All maintenance is paid for 5 years or 75k miles. We just put diesel in it and drive. Almost 30k on it and zero issues.
Only thing I do not like about it is the drive by wire responsiveness, has a delay that is annoying. Does not bother the wife. Not a fast car but it serves it's purpose and I would buy again given the chance.
