This VW deal really makes me want a new car, but I don't need to be spending any money right now and I would certainly rue having a new car payment again. I swore I would never buy new again.
How do we forget ourselves? How do we forget our minds?

I bought from Autobahn. Wallace is the sales guy and if you mention that I referred you, I get $100.

I bought from Autobahn because no one could get me the car for 5k off sticker. They were the only one.

A friend of mine bought from Hiley because he cant stand Autobahn. He didnt get as good of a sale price as I did.

I work on them myself. I just did the timing belt service on the 01 and 03. It cost $300 for a complete kit for each car.

After a 8 hours, I did timing belts, water pumps, idler pullies, camshaft seals, serpentine belts, coolant flush, and oil changes.

With the oil and filters I was in for around $700.

The timing belt service is good for 5 years or 100k so I am down to oil changes and air filters for a few years.

What about the AC systems, suspension, steering systems and things like that? Those pretty reliable in the VW's? What about squeaks and rattles?

I love my TDI. My girl is getting a 13 next month. Love the mileage, the ride, the lay out etc. I'll probably never own anything else for a commuter.

Get the tdi. The diesel technology in vw is amazing. The wife and I had a 1.6 golf bluemotion diesel for a weekend and after 600 miles at average autobahn speeds of 100 mph we were still averaging 64 mpg through mountains and villages and shit. Only paid €60 to fill back up. Seemed kinda heavy but the torque pulled us past trucks and slow cars.

The only thing we did not like about the TDI, on the test drive. There is no coasting. You let off the gas and it was like a drag brake. Took some time getting used to.

Best part was I let my wife drive first. When we talked about looking at the cars she turned her nose up at the low hp ratings. The first light she left she chirped the tires and put us in the back of the seats. She was like, " I did not mean to do that"! Torque won her over. But the drag brake effect is the big hurdle for her. Also we only drove the Jetta TDI because it was almost closing time and we knew we were not buying last night. The Jetta my wife felt was cramped a bit for space but I personally think it might be the steering wheel seemed smaller than what she was used to. I never paid much attention to that but it felt the wheel was a bit smaller??? We are going back to drive the Passat before we buy anything.

The 13 Accord we drove was super nice. We had an 04 Accord EX before and it was a "car". Nothing fancy, nothing flashy, just a car to get from point A to point B. the 13 Accord base model, was dang nice! In fact, my concern with that car was my wife was running 80mph without realizing it. It felt like she was going 50 mph and I looked over and it was right on 80 and the salesman said "does it ride smooth at 80?".....lol

The nice thing about my tdi is it only changes 2-3 mpg from city stop and go to highway. I have a 06 dsg for the wife and kid and 2000 for my daily.

Yes that does suck and takes a bit to get used to. I regularly tow a 2 jet ski trailer and a mx bike all around the metro and fuel mileage still doesn't change but 1-2 mpg and the torque is awesome never slows down. I don't know what the 13 is rated at but I'm getting ready to purchase the tune for 30 hp 55 torque.

I have both a 13 accord coupe that my wife got over her 06 jetta tdi. Of course the accord is nicer since its brand new. But it can't compare to the jetta mpg wise. So far the accord avg about 28 mixed, the jetta gets 40 avg to a tank no matter what. Jetta is at 150k only oil changes, fuel filters and timing belt change no problems at all. Only the a/c isn't near as cold as the accords. After having the jetta 4yrs and it got hit by the hail. The insurance gave me 2k less than what I paid 4yrs prior. So they hold value really well. Only thing about the new body jetta. The interior quality seems to have gone backwards a little in touch and look

People complained the 11 an 12 jettas etc were cheap on the interior. The 13s now have a soft dash and other plush comforts.

Suspension does wear out. In my old daily commuters I dont worry about. My cars have small problems with the systems you list but in my experience I have not encountered anything I couldn't fix.

Yesterday I noticed my a/c wasnt cooling. I popped the hood and noticed one of my cooling fans was not spinning.
I popped with a mallet and she started spinning. The ac is working and the new fan is on the way for $35.

that TDI chipped is bad ass, my son had one, a guy cam from somewhere here in Texas and chipped his turbo controller or something and it was about 2x as fast
Don't worry about what you can't change.

Stage 1 APR tune is $650 at Dubsquared in Arlington and makes a hell of a difference for a daily.
