Red the OP but not the replies so this might be redundant. Keep the pup around for as long as you can as long as you know it's not suffering. If it seems like it is at any point, do what you have to do. Also, you could get a pup now since you know "that" time is coming soon. Just show it the same love you showed your friend now and it will do the same to you.
