RIP Kaylee
Eight-year-old Kaylee Kampschroeder died following a bicycle accident on a hike-and-bike trail in Northwest Community Park in Frisco, Texas, on Saturday, July 27. Kaylee, of Krugerville, was with her father and one of her friends when the fatal bicycle accident occurred at about 9 a.m. Her bicycle wheel got caught and she had a bad landing which caused internal injuries.
Kaylee, who was wearing a bicycle helmet when she crashed, was transported by CareFlite medical helicopter to Children’s Medical Center in Dallas following the accident. The Dallas County Medical Examiner’s office later pronounced her dead.
The circumstances surrounding the bike accident are being investigated by police.
Falls are an expected part of the experience of riding a bicycle. Some physicians got together to provide advice on how to avoid injury in a bicycle fall, including the following tips:
Wear a properly fitted helmet so that if you strike your head on an object in a fall, the helmet can absorb much of the force of the impact. The helmet should have a seal from the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), or Snell Memorial Foundation.
Wear sports sunglasses when riding your bicycle, to prevent dust and insects from getting into your eyes.
Wear padded gloves as protection against blistering and against injury caused by debris in the event of a fall.
If riding for an extended period, wear padded shorts and use a comfy seat to minimize buttock pain.
Stay alert constantly and watch for any obstructions in the road.
Take steps to make sure you are visible to motorists, such as wearing bright clothing and reflective gear.
Avoid riding at night and in poor weather conditions when visibility is reduced.
Children 9 years old and under should not ride near traffic.
