  • Auto Insurance Question

I have a vehicle that is not being driven due to A/C not working and it just sits at a family members house. I have another vehicle that I have been driving for the past few months so I don't touch the other vehicle.

    My Question:
I contacted my auto insurance company, Geico, they told me the car has to be insured no matter if it's driven or not. IF I do cancel the insurance on it and call back months later to re-add, their stating that the rate will go up. I've never heard of such a thing, google didn't come back with anything except laws in the UK, so, does anyone know if this is true or not?? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Can't you just get parking insurance for next to nothing? Then you're at least covered if it's stolen or there's an act of God.

I suspended the policy on my mustang about a year ago. It sits other than when I drive it around the block. It's covered against theft and stuff, but not on liability, etc. The rate stays the same if I make it active again. It's a few bucks per month is all.

Call your agent and ask to suspend the policy. They'll go over it with you. It's a few bucks and then can be 'activated' later at the same rate.

Agree. Just suspend it for the time being.

Otherwise, you could just get some bare minimum insurance for the thing - maybe just some comprehensive coverage to make sure a tree doesn't fall on it, or your roof doesnt collapse.

Limited usage, liability only should only be a few bucks a month

That all depends on where the guy is going to be parking the car. If he parks it in South-central LA or in the middle of the Bronx, it will cost more due to the risk factor. If he parks it down in rural Kansas, then yeah, it will be a few bucks a month.

                      That's what DFW stands for?

Looks like the new age of internet marketing. Search google for insurance threads on message boards. Register and respond to a couple of topical questions. Put link in Sig. Bam - Free advertising.

Seems like a ban (or at least a sig delete) is in order.

I don't, and haven't for probably 5 years. Saw it when I looked at the user profile.

I took my formula off insurance. They asked if I sold it, I told them it was non running. They then asked for proof that the vehicle has not moved by verifying mileage at time of drop and time of re admission to policy. I told them the vehicle didn't have an odometer or motor and they could visit it in my back yard if they wanted and they agreed to drop insurance. But again my car hasn't moved or driven and don't plan to insure it any time soon. I suppose to be technical I could just have a second odometer just sitting around for any fun runs at the track.
