I think this is the route I would go. For some reason Im just hesitant to ask him for some reason. He seems like a grumpy old man. The only real interaction I have with him is from a time I drained my hot tub and he flipped out saying some of the water is leaking down into his yard and he was afraid the chemicals were going to kill all his grass.

Im almost wanting to just do it first, then see what he says after, lol.... but i guess if he doesnt like the idea, i could always get new metal posts and basically bury then right next to these wood posts, put up new horizontal pieces and basically have myself a whole new fence and nothing he could say about how it looks from his side. I was just hoping to be on the cheap side and not spend that much right now...Figure if I could save by sharing the posts or whatever be better. But I guess a few 10 foot posts wont cost that much more

Really? So a neighbor, if he is a caring neighbor, should put the fence planks facing the person next door to show he cares?

I've seen you make idiotic statements before, this one has to be in the top five or so...

OP, if you want a long stanging 8' tall fence, you should consider posts on 6' centers, 3' deep in the ground. Otherwise wind becomes an issue in making the fence lean. You see leaning fences pretty much everywhere you go, and this is the main reason for that.

I just thought it would be next to impossible to get the nails in unless he's in the other person's yard.... but that just might be common sense talking.

That's exactly it. I have never installed a fence in the manner he describes, it just doesn't happen.

not really. When I re-did part of my fence, I was able to climb through the cross boards to nail the smooth side facing my neighbors. It wasn't an issue till the last 2-3 feet when I couldn't slide through anymore. Even still, lower a 6ft ladder and climb over.

I actually preferred the post side. It keeps them from hanging crap on it, plus, if they have kids they won't climb up the fence to annoy me.

And I would take Mike's advice about using the same posts for an 8' fence. It was built for a 6', not an 8'. Even If you got a couple of years without it leaning over, the top of the slats from the highest cross board will start warping.

Never thought about the kids thing.... so yeah, that's a good thought, only thing I don't like about it is weed eating around the posts is a pain.

The problem you're facing if you do it right is losing some of your yard, plus you'll be forced to have the posts on your side. the majority I have done have opted for the posts to face their neighbors so they have the smooth side.

Were you going to hire it out or do it yourself? I would talk to your neighbor and work together. His fence looks terrible and won't last. The landscape timbers will shrink, badly, as they dry which causes checking, do your nails will pull out. Use metal posts when you go in.

It's called Round Up. Spray the fence line and you won't have to use the weed eater at all. Do it right, hug the fence and posts, and you'll never notice it from across the yard.

Don't some pos hoa's have rules about the fence height?

Yep, along with styles and such. I'm in Stonebridge Ranch in McKinney (which can eat my balls), so you have sub neighborhoods in the HOA. Our neighborhood is all 6'. Not sure why, but 3 blocks over, my brother in law's neighborhood is primarily 8'.

Yeah, but I'd notice it. I'd rather just put in the extra effort, i would spray in the gaps between the metal posts and the fence, but other than that I'll weed eat.
