I know a few guys like this, albeit not many. My son had to go change a co-workers tire a while back, I asked him if she couldn't call her husband/boyfriend, he said they were together and neither of them knew how to change a tire or where it was?! I didn't want him out on the highway taking a risk, the car was in a parking lot so no biggie and they gave him $20.00 for helping.

Failure to prepare is preparing to fail.

I would say, in most things in life, I will at least try to learn how things work for future issues. You have to learn as much as you can. You never know when you are going to be stuck like the OP's BIL.

hell, I was outside watching the AC guy work on my stuff to figure out what was wrong and what I could have done to do it myself.

I guess we are not all wired like that. Maybe it does have to do with growing up poor.

Sorry I couldn't help Frank. Is something to keep in mind though. Tell him to put a case of water in the trunk just in case he's stuck out

And a cap full or two of brake cleaner, but both are temporary.

Now in my possession, we took it for a drive today. I don't know anything about Hyundai's to know how they behave. The car won't accelerate over 40 though and was a long struggle to even reach that. The engine does not rev beyond 3500 rpm even in neutral or park. In park it acts like its a rev limiter bouncing at 3500 when I floor it. Is this normal? Kinda has me thinking maybe a timing belt slipped or a plugged exhaust? The trans looks like it has been leaking for a while. He did have his mechanic supposedly "inspect" every thing last week before he left since he will be driving this in college. Doesn't sound like it was much of a mechanic.

Sometimes shit just breaks. Most mechanics aren't going to pass up an opportunity to make money by not looking something over.

Yeah, that's what I am thinking. If I had the title in hand, we probably would have hauled it to a wrecker for $300 and call it a day but now I am curious if it could be something a little less serious. I'm giving him my Explorer so he can get home and not stress about it starting college. Good kids deserve a break once in a while. I have time to figure out what to do with it.
