    1. having a baby/kids around such a big dog
    2. as Chili stated... big ol' surprises lol...
I dont want to talk you out of them, by any means. My wife would really like us to rehome Duke because of the young kids. My daughter loves him, but is hesitant to play with him by herself, just becuase he doesnt know that he will knock her over so easily.

The other thing we have on our minds is that large and giant dogs have a life expectancy in the single digits. We arent looking forward to having to explain that when the time comes. Smaller dogs just tend to live longer.

I think puppies and kids go great together. As a puppy they grow tolerant of little kids. My girl dog doesnt really like little kids and will usually run away. Just read up on the mastiff forums...lots of great info. With mastiffs you learn cheaper ways to take care of you dog. A good quality food like Kirlkands dog food is relatively cheap and gets a good grade. Ivermectin can be used in place of heartworm medication. K9Advantix is good for 55lbs and larger with a single dose, etc.

Check into the Mastiff rescue...they sometimes have puppies. I dont think I will buy another dog from a breeder.

Mastiffs dont need that much space. They are big but lazy. My dogs sleep 15 hours a day. They honestly could live in an apartment (known a few people to have them in an apartment/condo).

Also, whoever said their dogs tear stuff up... more attention, more discipline. My dogs have NEVER torn anything up. In fact, we dont give them dog toys, they get kids stuffed animals as toys. The boy will eat the filling out of a toy if it happens to open up a small hole but we have never had toys intentionally destroyed.

Don't let that be the only factor you consider. Also think about stability and how much and long of a commitment a dog can be. I had a number of friends that got dogs right after moving away from home (or even while still home, but out of school) and most ended up either having to leave them with their parents, find them another home, or in some sad cases, give them up to a shelter.

It can certainly hamper the flexibility you need being younger and starting a career, life, etc. Especially if you are able to get on with a fire department and will be away from the a dog frequently for longer periods of time than a normal day job.

Don't get me wrong, I know there are plenty of people that don't / won't have those issues, nor am I saying firemen should not have dogs.. But I am glad I waited until I was a little older and more established before making the commitment to get pets. There were several times back in my young adult life where if I did have a dog, I would have likely had to give them up in some way for one reason or another.

You know, of the handful of people that I know got their dogs from breeders, most have seemed to have had health problems. And at least a couple were supposedly very reputable breeders rather than "puppy mills".

I firmly believe this, and wish more people would understand that most of the behavior issues their dogs have are usually their own fault. They are often the owners that throw their dogs in the back yard and don't spend more than a few minutes with them on a weekly basis. Lack of attention and interaction seems to be the worst. Not to say that having "outside" dogs are a bad thing, but what's the point of having a dog if you never interact with them? Unless it's strictly a working dog I guess (guard dog).

My next dog will be another shelter dog. I have a theory that shelter mutts are smarter and heathier in the long run.

My friend had one. When I would go to his house to visit, he would give me a yellow raincoat to put on because that mofo could cover your whole are with slobber in one fell swoop.

I've thought about it and I don't intend to get a dog until I have a stable schedule and a stable living/pay situation

They have been in my personal experience. But that is a small sample size.

I tried to adopt from a rescue when i was looking for my first pup. They were worse than SVO owners. If you didnt fit their mold of what a dog owner was, they wouldnt give you the time of day. if they did, you paid a couple hundred for the privledge. They are from the same clith as a puppy mill. Adopt from a shelter and save a life.

my two mastiff/shepherd mixes have been AWESOME dogs both health and personality wise. Shelter dogs from same litter.

If you are looking into English mastiff's, go to youtube and look up "living with an English mastiff"....specifically Tank. video is the funniest dog video I have ever seen!

Great dogs but don't they slobber a lot?

Yes I forgot that. They slobber ALOT. Always have a towel or two laying around.

You get used to that but your friends don't!

One of my friends had someone staying at their house who owned a mastiff, I have wanted one since.

Expect it to eat you out of house and home, expect it to take massive shits everywhere, expect it to have loads of health issues, and expect it to die at a very young age.

                              Have fun!
