Skiing in February, where to go?

I've only been skiing once, and it was at Crested Butte in Colorado. I'm sure Whistler's badass, but if you're looking to stay in the country, Colorado is awesme. Utah and NM are fine if you like cute, little mountains.

Nex Mexico doesn't have too many huge mountains, but Utah is just as quality as Colorado in that department. Also Squaw Valley, Northstar, etc in the Tahoe area are great places with tons of chicks with too much $$ running around.

Utah doesn't have a single 14er, or even anything close. They only have a handful of peaks over 13k. Anything over 12k there is considered big, while in Colorado, that's just considered a good spot to pitch a tent.

Seeing as there are only 2 of us that have ever skiied before I don't think we need to hit a 14,000ft mountain. Just looking for something with laid back skiing that is not too far from the slopes.

Plus I am doing an Ironman in May, not going to risk getting injured on any blacks.

Over the years, we've ended up back at Lake Tahoe. Between Heavenly, Squaw Valley, Northstar, etc, there's something for everybody. Ski all day, gamble all night.

...or this. I used to live in Tahoe City, and the scenery is just....amazing. There's plenty of difficulty there (the Winter Olympics were there once, for fuck's sake), but there are also easy-going trails for every skill level.

Colorado whoops Utah pretty bad in that category, too.

Of the biggest vertical descents among ski resorts in the US and Canada, Colorado has 4 in the top 10 and 8 in the top 20. Utah doesn't have any in the top 10, but they do have #13 and #18 on the list.

Yeah i dont know about all that crap, like someone else mentioned i'm more concerned with actual skiable acreage as well as the quality of the snow. People from all over the world fly to the Rockies, both SLC and Colorado for the skiing. I just think it's unfair to lump Utah in with New Mexico.

True, best snow I've had was in Utah, depends on the weather and the time of year tho.

Heck, I don't ski anyway, so I really prefer the mountains in the summer or fall. My in-laws are up there in Whistler right now and have been doing zip line tours and shit all week, and it looks rad.

My biggest factor in falling in love with a mountain destination is remote wilderness and wildlife. The part of CO I go to is extremely remote, and has awesome wildlife, but the lack of grizzlies and wolves does leave me craving something bigger and further North, with an Alaskan backcountry trip being the holy grail for me. One of these days...
