I bet there is a line of lawyers a mile long standing outside their current residence.

Who's gonna give an estimate on the house that doesn't exist? Are they just gonna take an average of the surrounding houses? Hopefully the family doesn't get fucked either way. Funny (to others) mistake.

If y'all think that's bad, you should've seen the tear New Orleans went on after Katrina. Houses with no roof? Give them a coat of paint and a new door. Untouched houses? Demolished without so much as notifying the owner.

          'Nuff said.

You've gotta hold the city of Fort Worth to a higher standard. Although after dealing with FW's code enforcement and building inspection people multiple times I understand exactly how this happened.

There are plenty of ways to estimate the value of a house. The less valuable the property the more accuarate tax records are. Figure out what houses sell for in the local area, divide by square footage, multiply by this property's footage and pay a little extra if you can produce records showing where it has been updated.

FMV x2 for the loss of....(insert tear)...grandma's house, would be fair.

I really don't get attached to shit, so provided I didn't lose pictures, I'd consider it a financial gain.

The sad part is that they will probably never get anything, much less what it was worth. The city screwed up.......I say the house is worth whatever the owner says it's worth. The contents are his to price too. I say about 5 million should cover it.

I'm all for making money on this deal, but that's a bit ridiculous if it's in the low 6 figures number.

Double what the house would have sold for on the open market sounds fair. Granted if it was my house I would be suing the city for every dime I could get out of them.

The biggest loss is if there were any heirlooms, pictures, etc. still in there.

I'm with this too. Someone negligently destroyed your house, destroyed pictures, books, furniture, clothes, heirlooms. It's worth whatever you say it is. Sue the city and the contractor

The city screwed up. I say the house is worth what the owner says it's worth. I think $ 5,000,000. should cover it. That's why you have errors and omissions insurance.

Gotta hit them where it hurts, or it will happen again. The only way to make a City really listen is to force them to pull out the checkbook.

I say this about everything/everyone when some illegal act is committed but the entity that committed it cannot/will not be criminally charged.

I agree, but it's a catch 22. Who funds the city's coffers??? People need to lose their jobs also. Imagine that showing up on a background check on their next job application!
