Good luck! Tough business from what I understand. Was with Allstate from 1989 to 2011. Family friend sold out and it went to crap.

What were the major hurdles/obstacles your family friend encountered when operating his/her agency?

My girlfriend is considering opening her own Nationwide agency down here in San Antonio. It seems to be a good gig if you canand get some steady renewals coming. I assume the first few years could be very stressful though.

Building a client base is the biggest hurdle. There are all kinds of ways to look at it but being focused on the big picture and marketing yourself well will go a long way.

Thanks guys. Insurance business is not easy... You would think since insurance is mandatory you'll have customers lining up. Not true @ all of course, and BMCsean is right...building that clientele is key.

Luckily I have good experience running a few agency's, managing over 20 agents, selling insurance & servicing. It's good to have an extensive knowledge of insurance to better help customers & even potential customers.
By no means do I know everything there is to know about insurance, you kinda have to find a certain line you're good at sometimes. I know some agents that are awesome at selling commercial lines but can't sell a personal auto policy or home policy if their life depended on it & vise versa... I've had experience on several lines which helps a lot. I even got my adjusters license @ some point to know a little more of what goes into the claims side.
Taylor- good luck to your girlfriend, the insurance business can definitely be made into a career & very profitable business... Just remember ALWAYS have goals because you don't ever want to just be shooting in the dark hoping for a good outcome because it will never be...it takes hard work & determination to build up your clientele & don't ever rely on just residual income because customers can leave you @ any point.

Keep your customers happy and you should get plenty of referral business.

Clicking through for a quote now. Can you do better than what it spits out or is what it tells you what you get?

I gave it a shot and it's $100 more per MONTH than I'm paying now. Sorry-wanted to help.
