  • poison mo fuggin ivy...

What works... I got a bunch on my upper neck and chin. Was out in the field paintballing and apparently found the sole patch of ivy or sumac... it iches like hell and looks horrendous. Calamine lotion never really seemed to work imo. Its in a spot on my neck/face that I have to shave.... I've so far kept it clean, alcohol swab it and try not to touch it. Thanks!

Prednisone is the only thing that works for me, but I'm highly allergic.

There are some good OTC meds but they aren't cheap...Like $60-$100.

All of the cheap OTC stuff only suppresses the itch but does nothing to get rid of/nutralize the urushiol oils that cause the skin reactions. You just have to wait for the oils to be removed from contact/washing, which can take days-weeks... The higher priced stuff actually removes/nutralizes the urushiol oils...

I guess it comes down to how bad do you want to get rid of it and how much are you willing to spend...

I use a hair dryer instead of stratching or hot water.

Doesn't break the skin and lets things heal, but still gives the relief of scratching.

If you can get a steriod shot it will help.

It's like jellyfish stings, you can pee on it to relieve the itch/burning. Just not around a subway line tho.

That sucks, I've never been in contact with that type of shit, luckily!

As mentioned get the shot. I just had it 2 months ago, after the shot, stopped pussing in a week. Cleared up within two.

Nurse gave me a shot during the visit, DR prescribed allergy meds and an anti itch cream.

I took benedryl before bed at night to "help" until i saw the Dr.

For OTC - Tecnu was recommended from my doc.

Bleach on a cotton ball, dab the infected areas to help neutralize the oil, as BlackGT stated, the oil is the issue, there is a product called Tecnu that you can wash with that will help to remove the oil on your body and clothing. It can also be rubbed on like lotion if you think you will be in an area that has poison what ever to help keep from getting it. I've always got my tecnu from buddies that worked for verizon, if you know a verizon worker see if they can nab you a bottle.

I've always heard dry laundry detergent helps. I've never tried it as I'd rather pay $25 co pay and get a shot.
