If that TSA process annoyed me that much, I would have just turned around and been absent for the ceremony.

Having done video and photography services for a number of ceremonies, events and venues I make it a point that security should know who I am, and while they are free to do their job, I should not get harassed or held for any reason that isnt clear. My contracts state that should I have issues at entrance due to security, I will attempt to notify organizers, and if no organizer is reached, I will leave and keep their deposit.

Now in this case, having a ceremony, and having your guest of honor absent due to security would be quite a big embarrassment.

Not anywhere near that. We had to submit information weeks in advance so they could look through our background and then we walked through a metal detector. That's it.

Yea, I'm sure security was told this vet was coming to the grounds and gave them his full dossier including pictures.

Usually, they aren't told shit. They have to treat everyone the same.

Nope, this man is a vet and everyone on the planet should know who he is and completely ignore protocol.

Nope, I had a cane, steel toed boots, a pocket knife, several pens, a belt bucklet that could double as a hubcap and so forth

Oh on that I agree. There shouldn't be a TSA at all.

In theory TSA is a good idea but they don't use any common sense...

They also aren't held to any standard and can't be held accountable for anything. Theft? No big deal. Sexual assault? Oops. Feeling up a toddler? Secondary screening
