On June 30, 2013, 19 members of the Granite Mountain Hotshots were killed in the Yarnell Hill fire near Prescott, Arizona. In May of last year, photographer Jakob Schiller captured the crew working to fight a fire in Catron County, New Mexico.

Christopher MacKenzie, right, and other members of the Granite Mountain Hotshot crew from Prescott, Arizona, scout a piece of terrain before starting a burnout operation that was meant to help contain the Whitewater-Baldy fire on May 31, 2012. MacKenzie and 18 other members of the Granite Mountain crew died in the Yarnell Hill Fire in Arizona on Sunday.

Sad deal all around, my parents live in Prescott, AZ about 20 miles from the fire that claimed the Fire Fighters lives. They were told to be ready to evacuate but then things calmed down a bit. Have not talked to them today.

The City of Prescott is in mourning for the young Fire Fighters, very sad deal!

I know most people aren't that interested in this thread and I keep bringing it back up, but this is the worst thing to happen to this "part of the world" in 80 years. Not that most people care about outdoor things, backwoods traveling, etc, but it's still a big deal.

Here is where these 19 guys deployed their "fire shelters." This had to have been as close to hell as you can get.

Dozer line can be seen in contrast to the surrounding burned area. This dozer line was put in to retrieve the the Granite Mountain Hotshots - this was not created during suppression efforts. Deployment site can be seen as slightly discolored area just beyond the end of the dozer line.
