You don't really know that he didn't fuck up. Not to sound like Trublu, but there are lots of details missing. For him to be in the hot seat right now, there may be a question of just how appropriate this shoot was. Without further info, none of us know, either way.

Maybe the soldiers had motioned for the guys on the motorcycle to stop, and they just kept barreling straight towards them hooting and hollering in a threatening manner. In that case, seems like it's a good shoot, and he'll be off the hook.

Maybe it happened to be the only road and the motorcyclists just happened to be going that direction, and maybe they were still 100 yards out, and maybe the soldiers didn't make any attempt to signal them to slow/stop, and therefore they never had a chance. Target practice.

Just like JBT cops, I'm pretty sure there are plenty of young fuckups in the military who are trained to kill and are itching to shoot at damn near anything. Am I wrong?

Hopefully they will review the details and he'll get a fair shake, whichever way that ends up.

Without more information the story is pretty much useless but Frost and others immediately go into the soldiers did nothing wrong but are getting hammered and a cop wouldn't be mode. There has to be other info that is being left out or jag wouldn't have filed charges. This situation happens all the time and when it's a good shoot the soldier isn't charged.

Actually, I am the one who brought this up as I wanted to have a reminder to look through it at a later date. For someone to approach a military checkpoint, you have to weave between concrete pillars . You should be at a crawl when you get close enough to the fire team for them to be able to engage. Knowing it's a war zone (actual, not Dallas on Tuesday) and how those stops go as well as what ROE is for vehicles approaching, I'm going to go with it's more than likely a good shoot but the locals got pissed and Karzai wants more money.

I tend to side with the Soldier. The article was piss poor on any facts, however my experience has been that...

1. There are plenty of signs.
2. The main reason that happens is people ignoring the signs. (Remember the car with a baby(ies) in it...etc multiple things like this happen - and unless the media can throw the military under a bus - they don't cover it)
3. Officers seem to be a little gun shy, it would've seemed pretty cut and dry to him if he gave the order.

I know some US civilians who thought they were important and ignored the signs. They figured since they had some badges and were US civilians (contractors, like I was - but either AF or not prior service) they could just roll on up. Without slowing and so on. Once they got lit up (lights) and got a Bradley's attention - they about shit themselves.

Point being - you're nothing but a threat until cleared. Civilian Afghan, American - whatever.

We'd need some fact though to know for sure on this one. It's all speculation on my part too, but if things were being done correctly - it was probably a good order.

Thank you very much. I don't catch all of them but I know there are good cops out there. The bad ones just piss me off. That was an amazing situation. I've read about it and watched it twice. Damned good shot but it's going to ride on that officer's mind for quite a while

Lt. Lorance's platoon came under fire in Afghanistan the first day he was in command. According to his attorney, on the second day... in the same spot... his platoon reported a motorcycle speeding toward them.
His soldiers asked for the OK to open fire. Lt. Lorance said "yes."
Two Afghan villagers were killed.

What was his platoon doing? Were they out on patrol, or in a camp?

Were they behind barricades and this motorcycle was attempting to blow through?

Or was the motorcycle just speeding somewhere in a village (or between villages) and it happened to be in the path of this platoon?


There is very little info to go on here, but if I thought me or my troops were in imminent danger, I would have done the same thing.M

My mind keeps thinking about Spc Mike Roberts shooting at the suicide bomber in the VBIED that tried to blow through the checkpoint.
