  • North Texas soldier accused of murder for wartime order

SPRINGTOWN, Texas — Rarely does an hour pass they aren't online. Never does a moment pass they aren't worrying and wondering.
"All day every day that's all I do," said Jamie Garza the cousin of Lt. Clint Lorance. She's behind the Facebook page and the website, www.defendoursoldier.com, dedicated to sharing Lorance's story.
"We always say, 'What would Clint do if this was us in his shoes?'" asked his mother, Anna Lorance. "There'd be no stopping him to fight for right."
Lorance was destined to help people, family members say.
"Our toys growing up, I had tractors and he had cop cars and Army jeeps. He always wanted to be a part of something like that," said brother Cody.
So Clint Lorance enlisted in the Army the day he turned 18, serving in Iraq and Korea.
When he got out, he returned home to Celeste, northeast of McKinney, and became the first in his family to graduate from college.
Then he returned to the Army as an officer.
Lt. Lorance's platoon came under fire in Afghanistan the first day he was in command. According to his attorney, on the second day... in the same spot... his platoon reported a motorcycle speeding toward them.
His soldiers asked for the OK to open fire. Lt. Lorance said "yes."
Two Afghan villagers were killed. Lorance is now charged with murder.
The soldiers who actually fired the shots were not charged.
"I know Clint," Cody Lorance said. "Clint, he don't act without completely analyzing everything. He does everything right in line with the way it should be."
The soldier's mother said Clint hasn't talked much about that day. "But he's told me how hurt he is. And how he can't believe it. And he told me he did what he had to do. And that he would make the same decision again," Anna Lorance said.
Fort Bragg did not give WFAA an explanation about why Lt. Lorance is facing second degree murder charges. They have said in other published reports that he gave an illegal order to shoot two Afghan villagers that were not acting in a hostile manner.
Everyone who loves Clint Lorance lives in North Texas, and that family is waging a war of its own to clear his name.
"You know, we'd like to see justice be done," said Tracy Lorance, the soldier's father. "It doesn't make sense. Makes you wonder what this is all for. It just don't seem fair."
They created an online petition, hoping to convince someone to drop the charges and stop the court martial. They set up a website, www.defendoursoldier.com, where they are also soliciting donations to pay for an attorney.
"Until I draw my last breath, I'll fight for my son, because I know him," said his mother, choking back tears.
His family has always admired what they call Clint Lorance's impeccable character -- character they can't believe is now being called into question.

Sounds like he made a bad mistake and may end up paying dearly for it. That's the breaks. I don't see anything outrageous from the info given so far.

It's one thing to act with malicious intent but believing that your troops are in danger and making a split second decision in good faith is completely different. Heck, cops in this country do the same shit daily and they don't get charged....and they're killing American citizens! Ridiculous.

        Mother fucking this!

Our ROEs are so freaking dumb it's ridiculous. How are our boys supposed to go out and do their job when they are constantly worried about being strung up at home?
It war, bad things happen, you try to make sure it doesn't but you can't control everything. They need to be brought home if they are just going to be hanged for doing what they believed to be a saving grace for their men.

I am constantly told that I cover for military when I call for accountability of cops. I'm interested in this because it displays what I keep saying which is "If cops just decide to kill someone and their pets, nothing happens. If I do it, it's a war crime."

Our stay should have been a lot shorter over there than it has turned out to be. Shit is in the beyond ridiculous category at this point.

Just goes to show that the idea of innocent until proven guilty is a dead concept. Just the fact that he was charged is enough for people to get up in arms. He'll have his day in court and if it was a good shoot he'll move on. The article makes it sound like local police filed charged against him for something he did overseas and just slightly references that its a military court.

There could be major pressure from the Afghan side from the family of the two villagers that were killed and filed a complaint/charge through official military channels. If the roles were flipped and a foreign soldier killed two american citizens due to fog of war and was a supposed "good shoot", would you want the foreign soldier charged and held responsible? Or have the foreign gov't just bulwark it with "shit happens"?

I hope he's able to present his side and be judged on the facts in court - not have the while thing judged in the media where no facts are presented.

Yes, if the two Americans were speeding towards a foreign military force in a WAR zone. I'm not saying they deserved to die, but use your head a little.

That concept doesn't apply to soldiers. We are always guilty until proven innocent. I can only WISH we had the protections that cops did and had such open ROE's that allowed us to fire on anyone we feel like

The US government isn't worried about protecting its citizens. The US government is, however, worried about its agents occupying a foreign country and killing THEIR citizens.

You are under the impression that the US government is more concerned with protecting its own. Well, it kind of is. Protecting its foreign relations that is.

                              Unfortunately, this is true.
