Hand calculated and Im talking about what we put in out fuel tanks. He used to burn cooking oil but lost his supplier for it. He had over 10 55 gallon drums of used motor oil so he decided to try it and see if the truck would run off the stuff. It worked but smoked way to much. He did some research, talked to a few other deisel shops and found out if you mix gasoline in the oil that it will thin it out and burn alot cleaner. Different temperatures and altitudes call for more or less gasoline in the oil, but the 7.3 will burn it. If you have an older pre 99 model 7.3 that has factory single shot injectors then its goin to smoke way more with oil in than the B code injectors do.


As for the mileage on his wifes excursion it gets 23 if you can get her to run the speed limit or at round 75 it gets a best of 23. It takes very few mods to make these trucks get really good mileage.

Since I got my powerstroke Ive only done a 5inch exhaust, cold air kit, and a switch on the fly chip. My boat is about the heaviest I've dared to pull with the tune but mileage I've stated earlier is what it gets. Hand calculated. I fill it all the way to the cap every time. As soon as my cousin gets me the same tune that he put on his wifes excusion then I hope to get upwards of 23 with no load.

City driving is a totally different story. Red light to red light I cant keep my foot out of it long enough to check the mileage, but I can tell you it doesnt come close to highway.

As for the onboard mileage counter, its never come off 13.1.

Man that is just hard to believe especially with 37's. What gears are in it?

I was getting over 20mpg driving in town with a cold air kit and hand held programmer as the only mods. The added bump in power and torque from the programmer was ridiculous.

3.73's. He has done a little bit of work on it. The one time I went for a ride in it she pulled a half car and held it on a lightly modded stang gt. Like I said these trucks aint no bitch.

over 20 mpg is not an unrealistic number.

I know it's not, but going 70-80 mph with 37's is just a bit of a stretch saying your getting 20 mpg.

It does it. If it didnt, I wouldnt have said it. When I got my truck a few months ago, my cousin was the first one I called and he got me on the right track to mod this thing to pull and get mileage. He has an f450 for a work truck that gets around 18 with the heavy mods he has done to it but it doesnt have the gear to get the mileage his wifes excursion does. He is also building a drag truck and with all the power he hopes to lay down with it, theres no tellin what kind of mileage it will get to and from the track.

Good luck finding a low mileage 7.3 in an excursion. Only ones you'll find are those that have had engine replacements.

I had a 95 psd that was cc 4x4 and saw as high as 20mpg. In my 00 with a tune and exhaust I would see around 17.5ish. It did have 4.10's.

My sub is a 99. 4x4 with roughly 32's. It used to get around 13, but since it never sees the free way anymore, it only pulls 11 or so, even when it does see some highway time. Oh, and it's a good ol 350.

I'm only looking to replace it because interior is going downhill. Mechanically, it's fine. A few electrical issues, brittle plastics, and crappy leather are what's wrong with it.

Good luck finding a low mileage 7.3 in an excursion. Only ones you'll find are those that have had engine replacements.

Yeah I know. I told her low mileage will be around 130k miles. She wants one with 50k or less. But whatever I guess she just won't get one.

There "might" (and that's a big might) be a couple out there, but if it's factory 50k or less they are going to want way too much for it I'm sure. What I would do if I were you would be to keep a look out at like credit unions and other financial institutions that repo cars and put them out on their lots to resell just to recoup the money owed on them. You can find some damn nice cars that way.

Like I said, I bought my truck with 160k on it. The weakest link is the tranny but they make parts plus an aftermarket multi disk converter helps out a ton.

I think my cousin told me that the converter freed up the most mpg on their excursion but I dont remember.

I wouldnt be scared to buy one with 150k on it. Most of the ones that have new motors in em have a new motor because some mechanic saw a massive amount of blow by and thought it was worn out, or he didnt know how to rebuild them the right way. What most mechanics dont know is, these motors were built with a huge ring gap, so from day one out the factory they make alot of blow by. Its nothing to be scared of.

Hey 2000gt, tell your wife that these motors last forever so long as she keeps the oil changed atleast every 5000 miles. 200k is nothing for a powerstroke.

One thing I forgot to mention on the 7.3, the worst part about them is the crank sensor. Get a 10mm wrench and a new sensor then keep it int he glove compartment next to the wheel lock. Only buy the ones from ford also. The aftermarket ones will cost you power and mileage.
