  • What's your limit on buying an SUV and mileage?

    As with the truck thread...

I'm shopping for an Mid-Size SUV. If you were going to spend 5-8K on an SUV what is your limit on mileage and any recommendations on models?

    I'm currently considering these models:

    Jeep Liberty
    Dodge Durango
    Ford Edge
    Nissan Murano
    Jeep Grand Cherokee
    Ford Escape

The wife has a 2004 Liberty with about 103k on the clock and we're to the point where we're probably going to get rid of it because I just don't trust it and don't want her to get stuck on the side of the road. It was great for the first 90k miles - no real problems. But the last 10k miles or so we've been dumping money into it - cracked radiator, failed water pump, etc.

With what you're considering I would probably go with the Murano. I've heard the Ford Edge's have had transmission problems.

Stay away from the ford escape... Its a great running motor but very hard to work on... The alternator is a biatch to replace...

I have a Durango r/t. Get used to 250 miles per fuel up (21-22gal). Although, I did hit 320 last week heading to Paris then to Longview.

I'm curious as to why 4Runner didn't make your list? For reliability, comfort, and durability it can't be beat.

"That thing got a Hemi in it?" LOL!

I've got an AWD/4WD Grand Cherokee Limited w/the 5.7 hemi, and it seems to like the petrol.

I can't even say that, mine has the 5.9 in it. AWD/4WD as well.

I'm definitely aware of the 4Runners but many I've seen around my price ranges are 175,000+ mileage.

My DD is my Roush 427R, I'm pretty sure whatever I get will be better by far. Being able to use 87 Octane again will be nice. LOL

Jeep Liberty is a hunk of shit. We sold my wife's recently. The drivetrain is reliable enough but the rest of it was starting to fall apart at 100k.
I had to draw the line when every fucking window regulator broke and they told me her VIN wasn't included in the recall to get them replaced.

I was about to say that with that price range, I'd expect anything you look at to have a minimum of 150k miles.

On vehicles such as 4Runners pretty much but many other suv's have been in the 100-120K range, a few in the upper 90's as well.

I drive a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee v8 with 264,000 miles. I still get 19 mpg like it did when it was brand new. I've never had an issue with it. One of the best vehicles I've ever owned.

With SUV's, it really doesn't matter. They are pretty much what I sell on my lot. Sold a 98 explorer V8 with 284K miles, still ran perfect, sold an 01 GMC Jimmy with 254K, looked and drove like brand new.

Avoid the Durango at all costs.

Yup, my experience exactly. I forgot about those damn windows. 2 of the 4 broke so far.
