The findings were that a bolt that the rear flaps were mounted to snapped on final. In the data recorder they pinpointed a snapping sound that had been found on other 737's and traced it to that. They went nose down, full throttle, only a few miles from the airport.
Im so sorry to hear about your grandfather. I am obsessed with anything air disaster related... this is the first I have heard of an accident happening the way that did. So sad. Side note, I agree with you feelings on being on a plane... hence why I do not fly :P

Totally unrelated, but I'd like to nominate Special K for the Best Avatar of The Month.

It was really surreal. I remember even minute details about that day - prior to finding out. I remember getting home and my mom calling my grandmother back but not knowing what was going on and position myself to kick something once I heard what had happened. The next several weeks were a blur, United flew us from Atlanta to Chicago, then to Colorado Springs. We had security that ushered us from the United Club where we had an open ticket, to the plane to avoid media. My grandpa was an architect (did a lot of design on schools, colleges, prisons, etc - including the super max facility in Canyon City) and had thousands at his funeral. I remember a group of black women, whom he had designed a church for, that were devastated, they seemed more fucked up than the family - in a really southern gospel-running up and down the aisles kind of way. Just a very weird period in my life.

I love flying. My dad was a private pilot when I was a kid (and former CIA wingman - Ravens) so I'm great with a small plane/jet. But the commercial ones make me nervous. Out of a weird secondary reaction, every time I'm getting ready to fly, I'll call someone and say "Hey, if I crash in a ball of fire, spread my ashes in the mountains" (or some other rather macabre saying) just to get it off my chest. Kind of like calling a lightning strike out so it doesn't happen again.

My father was an Air Force Col. and flew in Vietnam, both jets and a cessna as a Forward Air Controller. After the war he was a flight instructor. I love aviation but developed an insane phobia after returning from Europe after high school. It began with surreal plan crash dreams at least 3 days week which I still have that began in 1991!!!

That's some crazy stuff man. Sorry you had to go through it.

I didn't fly until I was almost 21, and I loved it. The next time I got on a plane was after my big car wreck, and I expected to enjoy it all over again, but physiologically my body said "fuck no!" once we were going down the runway. I didn't puke or anything, but I haven't liked flying since. I guess cartwheeling a car at 120+ makes you want to be in control.

Funny thing, when I was in a 4 seater prop plane puddle jumping from Scagway to Juneau last year I absolutely LOVED it, even though it was getting buffeted all over the place by wind. In a big plane the slightest turbulence can nearly give me a panic attack, but being in that little ass plane was like being in an old jalopy that was held together with bailing wire and duct tape. i expected to shit myself and it ended up being one of my favorite parts of the trip.
