    Possibly moving to the metroplex - input needed

    I am working on an opportunity right now that may result in me and my family moving to the metroplex, actually just outside of it. My brother lives in Keller and I know the Ft Worth area and northern Dallas areas very well. Unfortunately, that's not the area that I may end up in. Without going into too much detail, the gig is in Mansfield which obviously is on the southern side of the metroplex which I'm not too familiar with. Typical parent... I have two kids in school, so that is very important to me. My daughter will start 3rd grade and my son will start kinder.

    I'm looking at Burleson, Mansfield and Midlothian. I like the Midlothian area because you can get a nice house and a decent piece of land in the $250-300k range. I'm coming from the Midland/Odessa area so anything is better than this hell hole.

    Can anybody give me some LEGIT input? Maybe another area to consider?

          I've only been to the Midlothian area (There, Venus...etc..etc) a few times and always liked the people I met and the area. Hell, they have a Costco and other things there too.

          To me it's more country than low income and what low income tends to attract. We do not even have a Costco in the huge area of Van Alstyne.

          I will say if you can live a little more out in the sticks, it's SO worth it. The drives suck (I do about 20-30K miles per year now, from 8-12 when in Plano), but when you get home, relax and crack a beer outside in absolute silence (Other than wildlife and such)...it's awesome. No to mention being able to make big fires, do fireworks and possible shoot guns...etc..etc.

            Mansfield schools are good, better than midlothian IMHO.

            I would check out Maypearl if I was going to move, its a quiet little town that is still close enough to the metroplex when you need to "head in to town"

              I think Midlothian would probably be your best bet because as you mentioned the housing costs are a little cheaper down there plus the public schools are actually pretty decent. Even though DFW continues to sprawl all over the place, I don't expect it to hit as far as Midlothian even in the next 10+ years, so if you don't really want to actually live in the city and all the hassles that go with it, you should be fine down there.

              Edit: one more thing, and I'm sure others will jump in to correct me here, but Burleson seems to have lost that "out of the city" feel it used to have thanks to urban sprawl, and the schools haven't been highly rated either. Flame suit ON!

                  Midlothian was the place to go ten years ago, but the housing crash killed it, they were slapping up homes around there and selling them to anyone with a SSN, and then foreclosed on. Its still a decent place, but there are much better around. Hell even Vertnut moved away from Midlothian.

                    There's also the Godley/Cresson area, or Aledo in the other direction, but there's really not a damn thing out there.

                      This is what we want and want to avoid. I didn't want to sound like snob in my first post, but that's why I want to avoid certain areas that I know aren't where I want to be. We wanted to eventually end up in the Frisco, Allen, McKinney area, but it's looking like that won't happen. I guess I could do that, but I'd have a LONG drive each day. lol

                      I'm not opposed to being closer to the hustle and bustle of the metroplex, but I do like the idea of not living 10 feet from my neighbor.

                        See we're just the opposite here in my area. All the oilfield people are paying top dollar for homes in Odessa/Midland. I had my house built 3 years ago for $200k. One just sold across the street from us two weeks ago for $240, same floor plan. I put chunk down on when we built it, so I'm going to make out like a bandit on the sell of mine.

                          The dot.com boom happened to Frisco, except even after the bust people seemed to still keep coming. It's a nice area, sure, for that trendy keeping up with the Jones' look....nothing wrong with that. It's definitely not a cesspool like some parts of Fort Worth...not really my scene though.

                            U might look into the joshua area. Its only 25 mins or so from mansfield. Lots of nice homes on acerage that are affordable. The school disttict is excellent. It has a definite laid back country feel. I have lived here for 13 years. Would not consider moving to any other area of the metroplex.

                              That's the area we've been looking in, close to downtown, but high yella country with smaller rim size.
