Actually this is sort of the way I'm looking at it. The city has grown considerably over recent years and shit like this happens. I always try to stay armed whenever possible and I think if more people would do this it would help immensely, but all too often people get wrapped up with thoughts of fairytale living in someplace that's supposed to be 'safe' and continue to always expect that.

The person that got shot at Southlake town square is a good example of this, but he was specifically targeted I think for having served on a jury or something like that.

Living in a metro area with over 6 million people though, dealing with crime is just a fact of life.

Too bad we don't have Sam Axe to do some vigilante justice.

        That isnt 100% accurate.

I knew that Duncanville was a complete shithole the whole time I lived there, and couldnt wait to get out.

Exactly. And a lot of crime is that of opportunity. I avoid making myself a target by locking everything, not leaving valuables in my car, etc. I even upgraded the doors and locks on my house and made access and visability into my back yard almost nil.

People don't pay attention to their surroundings enough. Last week I was getting groceries and saw two old fuck scumbags that were walking diagonally across the parking lot looking at cars instead of going into the store. I finished loading my stuff up, then leaned against my car and watched them until they got wind of my eyeballs and left. If people would take an interest in where they live, conditions would improve. I'll stick around and try to make my home a better place. It isn't even close to perfect, but I like it here.

I never said Arlington was ghetto, I said it was a shithole. Big difference.
Hell I spent most my young life living/hanging out in East and South Dallas, I know what the ghetto is...

            Where did you find 65%?

            •White alone - 164,022 (44.9%)
            •Hispanic - 100,269 (27.4%)
            •Black alone - 67,087 (18.4%)
            •Asian alone - 24,564 (6.7%)
            •Two or more races - 7,188 (2.0%)
            •American Indian alone - 1,338 (0.4%)
            •Other race alone - 597 (0.2%)
•Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander alone - 373 (0.1%)

                Arlington -
                Violent Crimes - 1884
                Property Crimes - 19,459

                Irving -
                Violent Crimes - 515
                Property Crimes - 6,856
Crime rates are going to be higher in a larger, more populated city with a huge out-of-town draw thanks to the sports stadiums, Six Flags, etc. Apples to oranges. In other words, your Irving thugs are coming over and committing crimes against the fine, upstanding citizens of Arlington. (I'm mostly kidding about that last part.)

But seriously, I base my idea of ghetto on the things I mentioned in my post above. Violent crime numbers are an indication of safety, but most citizens won't be victims to those crimes anyway. I'm talking more about dirty ghetto factor that is encountered in the day to day living. In that aspect, Arlington isn't good, and Irving is still worse.

You said your office had been broken into a few times. That doesn't make an area sound less ghetto.

The abundance of donks, clapped out trucks with murals on the back, illegals standing around gas stations looking for work, people approaching asking for money, groups of saggy britches teens walking as slow as possible across the street in front of you, seedy bars, junkyards, dirt cheap motels, pawn shops, storefront signage in languages other than English, apartments full of spinners and drug dealers, welfare recipients, filthy toddlers running around outside with poor supervision, vehicles parked in front yards, old and musty malls that have mostly weave stores and greasy jewelry stores selling blingy grills and thick gold herring bone necklaces, Walmarts that are scary - even for Walmart, and areas with a high likelyhood that if your car broke down and you had to leave it - you'd be worried it would be stolen or stripped overnight.

                  Just my take on it.

Why would you move there knowing that? Maybe you shouldn't have moved there in the first place. Desoto was nice in 1984, but turned while we were there. We didn't know just how bad it was until we left.

Our office is in a Business/Industrial area. Though *we* are in a standalone building, these areas are high targets for crime, no matter what city you are in. Mainly because there is nobody there nights and weekends, and everyone knows it. And as I stated, they only actually got out with something once.

Irving went down the shitter some time back, yes. Crime has improved drastically since Gears took office (though he is no longer the Mayor). More police presence, higher property prices, condemning of apartment complexes, etc has all improved it drastically. I will say, I only have two reasons to go south of 183. Fred's BBQ, and my daughter's gymnastics. But I never have a problem, and even South of 183, things are turning around.

Yep that sounds like Division St.

I actually like Arlington and hang out there a lot. I also don't think its as bad as the reputation DFWM gives it.

Meh, whatever. I grew up there, and I like it there. My hood is nice and quiet, with the exception of that one house. Which, is about to be a non issue, according to the cops that patrol our beat. We are kind of tucked away, so no through traffic I suppose helps with what you said about crime of opportunity.

If I were to move, it would only be to one of three places. A loft in Downtown Dallas or FW, our ranch, or a beach. Since I have kids, a loft downtown isn't realistic, so it's either going to be the ranch, or a beach.
