I deal with this shit on an hourly basis. With just a few shy of 20,000 employees from over 60 countries working in one environment together you are gonna have this stuff. Bosnians hate the Kosovos, everyone hates the Afghans, the Afghans pick on the Indians, the Americans pick on the Bosnians, and the circles just go on and on and on. These dudes here will drop at the slightest insult and it costs them a job where they are making as much as 12 times their national average; Indians for example (dot not feather).
I get the reports from my guys in the field who conduct the inquiries for the incidents. 99% of the time they occur when supervision is not around. And 100% of that time is because the supervisor is a lazy fuck and doesn't have his finger on the pulse of his subordinates. We absolutely have a zero tolerance to horseplay cause as we used to say in the Marines, Horseplay leads to Sickbay. What start off as jokes a lot of time turns to insults or physical confrontations.
Then again, most of what we are dealing with now are stupid, petty, crybaby shit. "he touched me. I was assaulted." bullshit. But if you don't deal with it someone is gonna really get assaulted eventually. When I was new here in 2006, I told a group of Afghans working in a kitchen to knock it off, stop fucking with each other and stop calling me for stupid shit, wait until there is blood next time. BIG MISTAKE, next day I get a call and go to find a local with his nose exploded and bleeding all over the fucking kitchen.
Imagine the shit we see with the cultural differences, 7/12s for months on end and no breaks. Hell our Tier 5 guys, the Indians or Nepalese work for a year plus without a break. Shitty living conditions. Shitty environment. Most of our guys cannot have cell phones, or computers to call home or to entertain themselves. The list of catalysts goes on and on. My Americans get it. They are the least of our problems but when they pop off, it is big scale shit or very sneaky stuff like dropping empty booze bottles over the wall into your room so you get caught and fired.
Conflict Resolution. Identify there is a conflict. Discuss in a neutral tone and environment. LISTEN. LISTEN. LISTEN. Repeat the problem back to the employees to make sure you have it right and that they know you are listening. Discuss options to resolve. In most of our cases it is a simple, he was offended and it is a cultural difference. But if not handled, men will do what men do (a line taken from 3fingerpete). If at your level you cannot come to a resolution you need to escalate the issue to a higher party. Don't sweep it under the rug cause the two dudes are you buds. They will eventually handle it themselves and that will result in what you have here today.Fuck you. We're going to Costco.
