  • Time for a new drill motor

I have been limping through home improvement projects with an old black and decker 12V drill motor. It is time to replace it. Home Depot has several combo kits for $199. All drill/impact combos with 2 batteries. Rigid, Makita, & Milwaukee. Any recommendations. Is one better than the other?

I recently switched over to Milwaukee M18 lithium ion and its awsome. Have the impact and drill so far and am about to get the sawzall and maybe the angle grinder. Batteries last forever and alot of power.

You can quit here. Seriously, this drill with the impact driver is the best setup you will find.

Is it worth the extra $30 for the average DIYer? Drilling holes and driving screws? Nothing industrial or hardcore

I have the Makita kit at the shop (18 Volt) and tried out the DeWalt 20 Volt at sears and I have to say the DeWalt is nice and feels superb on impact strength. Of course, one is a 18v and other is a 20v and prices are a lot more expensive with DeWalt. I say I can vouch for the Makita.

Makita is just fine for around the house. Daily use or semi daily use the Dewalt is the gun of choice. I have also had very good luck with Ryobi but stopped recommending them to people because every time someone I know would buy on it would break and then it was my fault. For whatever reason my Ryobi has been going for 7 years now and gets used almost every day.

Ridgid has the best warranty that I know of. I honestly am a big fan of the Hitachi lithium ion stuff. You can check out bigskytool. They do lots of reconditioned stuff and its cheap. People on slickdeals buy them all the time and have great reviews. If you arent in a rush, Id go that route. I think the 18v drill and driver combo goes for $99ish on sale as a refurb

Check out toolup.com sometimes they run some pretty good deals on the combo kits for Dewalt.

Replaced my Rigids I've had since 05 this year with these and a dewalt sawzall

One vote for Makita here. I bought mine ~7 years ago now, moderate use, still going strong. Set came with a cordless drill, cordless impact, work light, and two batteries and a quick charger.

If prices are close to the same, Milwaukee has my vote. Mine is nearly 10 yrs old, and they replaced both batteries after the warranty had expired for nothing. There is a pro shop in Dallas. Good stuff.
