I do not know enough about 401k, stocks, or any of that stuff. I want to pull it out till I'm either informed or have someone to do it for me. Right now its in a high risk fund and I dont feel like figuring other shit out to fix it when i can just put it in my savings and make safe interest until I do investigation.

I know you said you want to handle retirement your own way, but what plan do you have that is more beneficial than your 401k? Tax deductable, company matched, etc.

You may not like that you were set up, but not saving for retirement by using such a beneficial vehicle is a huge drag on your retirement.

Our generation won't have social security to save our asses like the boomers have....

Its not that my plan is better its that I'm using a plan I know nothing about right now and it scares me that I could lose it for no reason.

How would you lose it? Are you talking about loss in the market?

All you have to do is get on your plan's website and move the money to cash. Once the market takes a dump get on there and move it back into an index fund. It really is that simple. No reason to get retarded and take it out and get pounded in the ass for 30%.

First off, I understand. I hate losing koney, but I hate not making money even more.

You've got a long time to go to retirement. For your money to grow, you'll have to assume some market risk.

Make no mistake, you are accepting risk any way you slice it.
Investing = chance of gain, but risk of loss.
Withdrawal= certainty of loss.... 25-40% depending on your tax bracket.
Leaving it in a stable value fund (basically 401k savings account) = inflation risk.

Pick your poison. Personally, I want the one where I have the chance for my money to make me more money. (Option 1)

So I have to start monitoring the fucking market? I already have a full time job. You make it sound easier than it is, I dont have any experience doing this other than playing stock market games in high school.

I would rather keep it in my savings, safe, and then worry about it in a year or two when I can just get someone else to do it.

It sounds easy because it is easy. You don't sit there and day trade. Just wait until the market drops a bit, and the move it to an index fund like johnny said.

You'll know when the time is right when you see a thread here along the lines of "oh shit, my 401k just lost xx%! We are all gonna die!"

It's 2 grand, what are you going to do with it otherwise? Buy some sweet DBZ collectibles and hope they go up in value?

Dude, you don't have to watch the market, you aren't day trading. You can put it into a more conservative fund that offers less risks but yields lower returns. If things go all 2008 do what Al said, then when you think it bottomed out put your money back in. Sc281 has also offered some good advice, IMO.

Here's a decent motivator to show you the value of holing away cash...

You can dramatically increase the value of every dollar you earn by saving, investing, and allocating your money intelligently!
