  • Man gets 50 years for stealing $35 worth of ribs

WACO, Texas, May 30 (UPI) -- A Texas jury has sentenced a man to 50 years in prison for the theft of a $35 rack of ribs, noting his criminal record includes five prior felony convictions.
Willie Smith Ward was sentenced Wednesday in Waco's 19th State District Court for the September 2011 robbery at an H-E-B grocery store, the Waco Tribune-Herald reported.
Prosecutors said Ward entered the store and tucked a large rack under his shirt, and then left.
Ward also threatened an employee who tried to stop him in the store parking lot, saying, "I got a knife," the employee testified.
When determining Ward's sentence, the jury took into account his criminal past, which includes five felony and four misdemeanor convictions.
"This verdict shows that the citizens of this county will not tolerate a continued disrespect and disregard for other people and their property," said assistant District Attorney J.R. Vicha, who prosecuted Ward. "People who choose to do so will be dealt with seriously and appropriately."

I don't care if it was $100 of ribs. That was just stupid. We're going to spend about $22,000 a year to lock this knucklehead up for 50 years?

Our legal system lacks any resemblance of common sense.

I am all for this. Too bad it took 5 prior felonies to lock him away. One of the many problems with our legal system is criminals are not scared of the punishment. Very few of them take things serious and hopefully this will make a few people think twice before trying to commit their next crime.

With his record I am glad he is going away for a long while but why was he on the streets with his record anyway. I would love to know what the felony convictions were. Laser Cannon Death sentence should have been applied before the shitty court system realized he was a shitty human prior to stealing $35 worth of ribs.......

yep although 50 years seems pretty harsh, the guy was a career criminal, if he already had 9 convictions imagine all the other times he got out of it or just didnt get caught...he had plenty of chances.

            50 x about 22000 = $1.1Million of your tax dollars.

I too would like to know what the past felonies were but I think its high time we got a bit more creative on how we punished offenders. I don't like wasting money like that.

Sounds like with his previous record, the karma wheel finally caught up with him and ran his butt over.

He was convicted of ROBBERY (felony) not a theft as the liberal media would like you to infer from their poorly written article... Career criminal, lock him up before he kills someone "stealing" his ribs, and we're asking "gee why wasn't this career criminal locked up ?"....

It is only considered Robbery because a threat was made.

Just to be clear. I'm not defending this guy. I don't know his past record. I just think it is wasteful to spend over a million bucks to lock him up. We need to get more creative.

Now if he has a history of violence, then I would seriously consider changing my mind.

Ward has previous felony convictions for burglary, attempted robbery, aggravated assault, leaving the scene of an accident and possession of cocaine, and four misdemeanor convictions, including two thefts. - According to WFAA

Most of us would like to just put these types down..but that's not allowed in this state yet. At least in most Texas prisons they don't have air conditioning, so for at least a few months, he'll think he's in hell.

You can see his convictions. I am sure he was tried and convicted of EVERY crime he has ever done and never gotten away with anything...

I am all for rehabilitation when possible, but apparently our justice system is screwed up. News to me.
