Granted, they are working with old classic car stuff, but the theory was that r134a was cheap, and that was good enough to check it out and see what happens.

Another intersting thing he said was that he didnt expect mine to hold a vac if it was empty, but he did say that the chances were good that it would hold pressure either way. I actually had some pressure in mine when I started, but the compressor wasnt good and there was a restriction somewhere too ( I think).

hope that rambling makes you feel better?
That sounds good enough for me, I'll take my chances either way. This is the only the summer that I'll be dailying this car (I may not make it through July without picking something else up, though) and I can live with my commute without A/C, but it'd be really nice to have something moderately functional in that respect.

this is going to sound really odd, but hear it out.

I race with some guys that will take anything they can find and figure out a way to make it function as they need it. They decided they wanted to camp in a tent but wanted some cold air blowing in there so they wouldnt be so hot.

They grabed an ingloo cooler, an in tank fuel pump, a battery, and an evap/case they had removed from thier race car that has the fan in it. Then, a chunk of dry ice in the cooler and filled it up with rubbing alcohol, and flipped it on.

he said he woke up and turned it off when he could see his breath in the tent.

that might be the absolute best way to describe these folks I have ever heard.

And Im contemplating putting together a portable setup that could be used off a cig adaptor in a car, or plugged in at the shop to help cool it down some in the summer.

I'm already thinking of more than a few applications.

being able to switch it on and have a nice cool car to hop in after work would be awesome.

Id like to see how long the dry ice lasts, and how cold it stays after it is gone. It might be worth it to make a good sized setup for cooling the shop down some.

I have a pretty good stash of R12 but it is big bucks if you want some. Propane works REALLY well. Cooter runs it in his AC systems so you may want to pm him for details.

propane is a direct replacement for r-12

I had an old beater 91 GMC pickup that needed the A/C system recharged. Fixed a couple of O rings and I threw straight 134a in there without changing the oil or adding the service ports. Rat bastard blew cold as ice all summer long. AFAIK, it's still blowing cold.
