          • My kidney stone experience

My experience -- it's long -- so please skip this unless you're interested in ideas to prevent these from forming or how to get through the attack.

Thought I was going to die from my kidney stone (4.5mm) when it first left my kidney and started traveling down my right ureter (tube that leads to the bladder). 6 hours of non-stop knife twisting pain in my left ab. Prior to that, for a month, I experienced sore nuts, a burning sensation off and on when I took a whiz, a flaring metronome like burning sensation in the tip of my peniz.

My stone has still not passed. It's 1 cm from the bladder (according to the $380 CT scan the local radiologist performed). Once it hits the bladder, I should be able to whiz it out my BB gun with little pain. 5mm is the max size they say you can piss out, although I've read where guys have pissed out much larger stones. My symptoms / pain level has been pretty light since I had that attack a couple weeks ago, with a few exceptions of mid-level discomfort. The pain now moves around from my left lower abdomen to my left lower back (kidney area), racked nut feeling (all day once) to pain whizzing. So I know I've still got the stone.

For the record, I'm in my mid 40s and have never drank soft drinks or iced tea. So what caused my first stone, I have no idea. I'm hoping the urologist can tell me once they test it.

            Advice to you guys:
            1) Drink a shot-glass full of lemon juice/apple cider vinegar poured in a glass of water every day. The acidic nature of this will help dissolve any forming kidney stones in your kidneys so you don't have to go through this torture.
            2) If all of a sudden you start having odd pains in your nuts or when taking a whiz, or if your urine is a bit darker than normal, or if you have a spell when you get that knife stabbing pain in your kidney (ab or lower back area), you probably have a kidney stone. Don't waste time with your general doc - go to a urologist.
            3) If you decide to fight the official kidney stone pain attack like I did and not go to the ER, get ready. The pain is non stop and no amount of hydrocodone will help the pain go away. You can't walk and you can't breathe, and you can't find a position to curl up into to make the pain go away. You may puke multiple times (I did). The thing to remember is to constantly check your body temp to see if you have a fever. If you do, your kidney is blocked and an infection has formed --- get to the ER IMMEDIATELY. You don't want your kidneys to shut down. Follow my step #1 (half a glass full of the apple cider vinegar or lemon juice, the other half with water. This will help the stabbing pain go away. SERIOUSLY. Don't gag on it, though. Tastes like crap.
            4) I had two hour-long knife attacks two weeks apart before my 6 hour all night knife attack. I had no idea what caused those two episodes, nor did my general practitioner doc. After the third 6-hour attack, my urologist confirmed my self diagnosis. I'm finding a new gen pract. doc, btw.
            5) Exercise. Keeping your body moving, if you can, will help the pain go away and keep you mind off things. I honestly don't think I could walk during my three attacks, so I was at the Lord's mercy and the mercy of the stone. But since my long 6-hour attack, whenever I had a serious pain flair up, I would exercise big time. Last week, my abs started giving me that awful twinge of pain warning me to the onset of an attack. I jumped on the stationary bike for 20 minutes, did the 8-minute ab workout (youtube) and got in the hottest bath I could stand. Pain was gone. Heating pad also helps.
            4) Stay hydrated all day - I'm trying to drink more than 2 liters of water ever day. Sux getting up 3x at night and I've given up pizzing through a strainer (beat down!), which I've given up on a week ago, but I'm hoping to pass this thing soon.

My doc is pushing for lithotripsy (non invasive = no catheter up your bb gun hole) where you go to the hospital and the knock you partially out and with shock waves, try to pound your stone to sand so you can pass it, but pounding my innards to mincemeat in the process is not my idea of the right thing to do, so for now, I'm trying to do this the natural way. We'll see... I about 10 days to go before we roll into 2014 (new year) when they can schedule me for surgery and I can pay the cost against my high-deductible health insurance if I want. Yes, this crap is expensive. That's why I'm trying to handle it on my own. I'm on flomax, which softens up the bladder and urethra walls to help a stuck stone pass.

Good luck, guys. If I learned anything, I've learned some people get kidney stones 4-6x per year ("stoners") and they deal with them. They've learned how to pass them and to read the signs when a stone starts is awfully painful travel from the kidney through the ureter to the UV junction (where mine is stuck right now) to the bladder, to the urethra (tube from your bladder to your bb gun) and out. So why should I complain about trying to piss out a very passable sized 4.5mm stone? Right?

Good luck and God Bless! Hope this helps one of you guys out!

            • Good luck with litho, they told me it worked but I was admitted the next day for the same stone.. Apparently even though the echo showed that it was breaking the stone up, it wasn't.

                  • Been there, done that. Hope you have insurance if making hospital trips. 2 days in equals about 30 g's , plus the follow ups if you get the stint. Get well soon.

                    • Just got out of Surgery and they put a stint in me. I felt like I had to piss right away, Well that was pretty damn painful in itself, Felt like I was pissing fire out my shit! I don't feel as much pain as I did before the stint. But considering I just got out of Surgery. Im sure some of the Anesthesia is in my system.

I swithed from 4 mg of Morphine every 2 hours to 1 mg of Dilaudid and man that one MG did more then the 4mg of Morphine did and took the pan away in less time & last longer.

Going tomorrow morning back in to Surgery to have Litho on the Stone since its 8.5 mg busted up so I can pass it easier. Looks like a Hospital Xmas for SEB!

Thanks guys for your concern, Nice to know people care! Will touch back tomorrow morning. My Phenergan is kicking in & im feeling groggy again. Im pissing through a Strainer to catch this damn stone or stones after they get done busting it up

Oh yes, last Crohn's attack I had, 4mg of morphine did absolutely nothing, but that dilaudid made all the pain go bye bye. That shit is AWESOME!

That's no shit either. That flaring pain was the worst. It felt like my wang was trying to peel in half. That started happening to me towards the end.

My stone was 4mm and was with me 6 months for first attack to passing it. Everyone said that you won't feel it pass, but that is wrong. I knew immediately: it is very noticeable. Didn't really hurt, so don't worry about that.
