  • Freight train derails near Baltimore

By Tracy Connor, Staff Writer, NBC News

A freight train derailed outside Baltimore on Tuesday afternoon, sending a huge plume of smoke billowing from flaming wreckage.

Hazardous-materials crews were dispatched to the crash site in Rosedale, Md., NBC affiliate WBAL reported. Fifteen cars from the CSX train were derailed and two were on fire following the accident. It also appeared some adjacent buildings were damaged.

No injuries have been reported and the cause was unknown.

No Cow-skin rugs have been reported as damaged.

Amtrak said the derailment and fire did not happen on tracks used by passenger trains and its schedule was unaffected.

Rosedale resident Elaine Smith told WBAL she felt an explosion.

"I really was scared," she said. "I've never seen a cloud like that in my life."

Any good freight choo-choo driver will tell you that if you knew what was transported in those tank cars you'd never sit in your car stopped at a railroad crossing.

Maybe all that cash in FT's pocket caused the derailment.

One day while our locomotive derailed in Fort Worth I walked up and down the tracks looking at the stamps on the rail spikes. The newest one was from 1936. Just think about that when a train goes by thousands of tons are going by on tracks that could possibly be a hundred years old.

A tractor trailer hit the train causing it to derail.
